You can use the large park for parking. Walk 2 to 3 minutes, enter from the back, and go around to the front. Admission is free. It's a small local history museum occupying only the 1st floor. Interesting exhibits include remnants of the now-gone Japanese National Railways era, displays conveying the town's joy and excitement when Nakashibetsu High School competed at Koshien, and the happiness of Nakashibetsu Airport being built and jet aircraft arriving. It was an enjoyable local history experience that helped me understand Nakashibetsu Town's history.
View on GoogleA museum-like facility located about 5 minutes by car from Nakashibetsu Airport. Opened in 1971, it can be visited for free. Inside are exhibits on Nakashibetsu Town's history and daily life since land reclamation, as well as materials related to the Shibetsu Line. Outside, the 「C11 No. 209 steam locomotive」 formerly used on the Japanese National Railways Shibetsu Line is displayed, but there are few railway-related exhibits indoors, so visitors hoping to learn about that subject may find it lacking.
View on GoogleFree admission. A local history museum inside Maruyama Park. You can use the park's large parking lot, and after a short walk toward the densely wooded park, it soon comes into view. The building is quite small for a local history museum, modestly standing as if hidden among the trees. The exhibition room occupies a single floor that is by no means spacious. Collected objects with a sense of age, presumably gathered from the town, are carefully displayed with nameplates. The historical context feels somewhat random, and there are hardly any explanatory texts, which is a little unsatisfying. However, the items are in good condition and neatly arranged, and you can easily look around in about 10 minutes, so that's not bad either.
View on GoogleI gained a good understanding of Nakashibetsu's history. The railway historical materials and photographs were particularly good. The history of Nakashibetsu Airport is interesting too.
