The Nakagawa Town Eco Museum Center is a fascinating facility filled with a wide range of fossil and ammonite exhibits, perfect for anyone curious about prehistoric life. Housed in a former junior high school, the museum has cleverly repurposed the space into an engaging and educational experience. What sets this museum apart are its interactive activities, which make learning fun for visitors of all ages. Whether you're examining fossils up close or participating in hands-on exhibits, there’s plenty to explore and discover. The museum’s unique setting adds to its charm, blending a sense of history with scientific wonder. My daughter and I visited this museum, and she thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The interactive activities kept her engaged, and it was a joy to see her learn and have fun at the same time. Overall, the Nakagawa Town Eco Museum Center is a must-visit for families, students, and anyone interested in natural history. It’s an inspiring example of how old spaces can be transformed into places of learning and discovery.
View on GoogleVery cool place full of fossils. Little off the main road, but well worth visiting. 200yen for adults which was great value. Literally hundreds of different fossils. Found it really interesting to see, most of the info was in Japanese, but was some english headings here and there, but very cool specimens regardless. Located in an old school in the gymnasium. Please remove your shoes and put on slippers for walking around the hall.
View on GoogleUnexpectedly good...small museum that houses fossils. Amazed that many of the exhibits are from Nakagawa town. Oh yes, the museum is in a high school.
View on GoogleA small, hidden gem of a museum with marine fossils and a few dinosaur parts. My kid and I enjoyed it!
View on GoogleAdmission is free during the winter period starting in November, but be careful because the opening hours change 9 to 16, closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays If you only trust the hours listed on google map, places like this are where you’ll mess up lol Adding this because I revisited on a weekday in November Maybe because it was a weekday, I was the only person there. The exhibits begin with explanations of northern Hokkaido’s terrain in each era, followed by fossils arranged by era. They’re very comprehensive and worth visiting. Even if you don’t understand anything, just being amazed and saying “ammonites are awesome” makes this a worthwhile place. Nakagawa town has hardly any facilities in terms of tourism (sorry), so you won’t regret visiting. Also, it’s well known that this facility uses a former school building, but it seems to be used as accommodation for research students and others on fossil-related research trips as well.
