Three times I've come here during the winter, to sip on scaldingly hot coffee and watch snow fall slowly out a semicircular window flooded with light. Steam will billow out a kettle on the stove. Most times I will see master's head peeking above the scattered countertop, eyes on the day's paper. Music and voices will play crackle out her radio. It's a wonderfully rustic coffeeshop on a quiet corner in sleepy Muroran, that welcomes you in till late into the evening. I make it a point to stop by whenever I'm in town.

This place is retro. Authentic retro: opened 50 years ago and nothing has changed. Super atmospheric, friendly owner and tasty, reasonable food. Morning set for ¥600 until 10am.

A cute little nostalgic-style shop, the food is delicious, the breakfast set comes with soup plus a cup of hand-drip coffee, the portions are very generous, only 700 yen, the lady owner is beautiful and elegant—a great place to have coffee in Muroran!

Washio★Jiro's "Cafés and Old Guys" series vol.134 / Travel Café edition (Muroran) ☕️ Soft Blend "Eikokukan," a brick-style coffee shop long loved in Muroran. Built in Showa 51 (1976), it's a charming place—truly a Showa-era kissaten. The atmospheric interior, with jazz playing, was reportedly used as a filming location for the much-talked-about Netflix drama "Sayonara no Tsuzuki," Mana Ashida-chan's drama "MOTHER," and Yo Oizumi's "Tantei wa BAR ni Iru 2." Besides local regulars, it's actually also famous as a café that many fans visit from outside the city. In addition to coffee and tea, the mama-san's homemade dishes are hugely popular here♪ Today I visited on a pilgrimage to a "Sayonara no Tsuzuki" location. I had the "Soft Blend" in the seat where Kentaro Sakaguchi sat☕ While watching the drama I'd thought, "They sure found a coffee shop with such atmosphere in vast Hokkaido~," but it seems it's a famous place among production crews too. The good old Showa era remains here just as it was— it really seems like the kind of place anyone would picture when they think of a "kissaten." The coffee was delicious♡ Thank you for the treat♪ (Visited December 25, 2024)
