Cozy small restaurant just in front of the museum. Quite affordable, foods are delicious, staffs are friendly. Everything is self service.

Located outdoors at 三笠鉄道村, a restaurant using a キシ80 dining car. There were food stalls at the railway village festival too, but unfortunately it was raining. There aren't any convenience stores or similar places nearby, and it was busy at lunchtime. There are only tables for 4, and they don't arrange shared seating, so whether you can eat here depends on your timing. The チキンカツミートソースパスタ was generously portioned, which was nice. The taste was quite ordinary. Water and other items are self-service. It seems not to open on weekdays. Even on weekends, it's best to check the opening hours beforehand.

My previous post (2019年5月) had disappeared, so I'm posting again. It's on the grounds in front of 三笠鉄道記念館. You can enter without paying museum admission. This diner operates in a renovated retired dining car (キシ80). You can see what the same type looked like in active service at クロフォード公園, 3km away. There were many restaurants like this around the country from the Showa era to early Heisei, but this might be the only place left where you can casually eat inside a train car without paying a special fee. It used to be sandwiched between old passenger cars, but in 2012 they went to the trouble of turning it around and moving it about 100m before reopening. The interior has been extensively remodeled, but the long, narrow space retains the dining-car atmosphere. Unfortunately, the kitchen has been enlarged, so there's no passageway alongside it. Enter through the door on the table side, look at a menu on the table, then order at the counter at the back. They don't use meal tickets, but payment is in advance. The menu includes ramen, soba, curry, and more. There's children's curry too. It's tastier than you'd expect!

A diner inside 三笠鉄道村 that uses a train car. It's in 「キシ8031」, a car that was actually used as a dining car on JNR's キハ80-series limited-express diesel trains. The drawback is that opportunities to visit are limited, since it opens only on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, and only at lunchtime.

Two young staff members who looked like students were working hard. You pay when ordering, and water, chopsticks, and other items are self-service. It was lunchtime, so it was busy with families. Perhaps because crossing signals and train sounds can be heard so close by, some children get noisy, so the atmosphere might be a bit tough for people who dislike children. There are only tables for 4, so I also felt bad using one on my own when it was crowded. However, there are absolutely no other restaurants or convenience stores nearby, so the thought of this place being closed makes me shudder. It seems to open on weekends, but it might be best to check before going, just in case.
