At the Meiji Naruhodo Factory in Tokachi, I was reminded of the quiet charm of the Meiji Smart Cheese series. Rather than soft slices for sandwiches, these are small, cube-shaped cheeses designed to be savoured as a snack. Compared with ordinary sliced cheese, they feel firmer and more compact because they contain less moisture. The flavour is noticeably richer, with a clear savoury depth. Each cube is small and easy to pick up, making them feel less like cooking ingredients and more like convenient, bite-sized sources of nourishment. There are two main varieties, each with its own distinct character. The Parmesan blend has a strong, savoury character with a pleasant saltiness and deep richness that pairs well with Western-style meals. The aged cheddar blend has a smoother, rounder texture with a gentle richness and slight tang, making it appealing to many people, including children. Nutritionally, they are quite similar, so the difference lies mostly in flavour. From a dietary perspective, each cube contains roughly forty to fifty calories. They are largely made up of fat, protein and calcium, with very few carbohydrates. As sugar content is low, this snack is less likely to cause sudden spikes in blood sugar, making it a steady and reliable option between meals. One thing to be aware of is how easy it is to keep eating them. Their small size makes it easy to reach for another piece without noticing. Finishing a whole box in one sitting is easy, and it is here that excess calories can quietly add up. Enjoying a few pieces a day strikes a good balance. Compared with sweet bread or sugary snacks, a couple of cheese cubes provide greater satiety and more balanced nutrition. They help to curb hunger while providing protein and minerals that support the body more effectively. In essence, these are thoughtfully designed cheese snacks for adults who want something satisfying without excessive sweetness. It's practical and convenient to keep some in the refrigerator.
View on GoogleI booked in advance from 横浜 and took the first flight from 羽田, barely making it by 10. The careful explanation of about 70 minutes helped me understand how cheese is made. Is sliced cheese actually sliced? Oh, so that's how it works. Why not visit once to learn? Of course it's free, with tastings and souvenirs.
View on GoogleThis facility offers free cheese factory tours with advance reservations. Recommended for cheese lovers! The content was a little difficult for preschoolers, but I think elementary-school children and older, as well as adults, can enjoy it. You can learn the difference between natural cheese and processed cheese. I've visited various tour facilities, but one thing that surprised me was how few people work inside the factory. After the tour, we tasted Camembert cheese and received chocolate as a souvenir! You can buy various types of Camembert cheese from a vending machine. There's also a rare product called カマンブルー, which is apparently handmade. You can comfortably take the tour even in the rain, and the large factory, so characteristic of Hokkaido, is worth seeing! Be sure to check out the trick art inside the factory while you wait!
View on GoogleI booked a visit as an activity during my trip. The easy-to-understand explanations and exhibits were wonderful. It was a weekday afternoon, but many families with small children participated. You receive a chocolate bar, a ballpoint pen, and a zippered bag as souvenirs, and can also taste Camembert cheese. It's both educational and a fun way to spend time. Recommended.
View on GoogleAdvance reservations are required, but the factory tour is free. You can learn how 明治 makes cheese. It's also a good photo spot, and I received マーブルチョコ as a souvenir. You can taste cheese, too, and products using 明治 blue cheese that you can only buy around here are available from a vending machine. They also give you ice packs and an insulated bag. The tour itself might be a little boring for children, but it's educational, so if you're sightseeing in 帯広, perhaps book it so you can stop by along the way? Allow about 90 minutes, including the tour, waiting time, and tasting. It's not as crowded as 明治なるほどファクトリー in 大阪, so reservations are easier to get. It's good for travelers, too.
