I had the chance to visit the observation deck in Ofuyu, Mashike Town, and it quickly became one of my favorite seaside viewpoints in Hokkaido. The deck overlooks the Sea of Japan, and on a clear day, you can even spot the Shakotan Peninsula as well as Teuri and Yagishiri Islands in the distance. The view is already beautiful during the day, but the real highlight comes at sunset—the sun slowly sinking into the horizon, painting the sea in shades of orange and gold, is absolutely breathtaking. What I also liked about this spot is that it’s not just about the view from above. At the foot of the observation deck, you’ll find Cape Ofudo Rock Park, where the unique rock formations shaped by nature give the place a rugged yet scenic charm. It’s perfect for a short stroll before or after enjoying the panoramic views. The deck is only open from late April to mid-October, with different operating hours depending on the season (9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in spring and fall, and 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM in summer). It’s closed at night and during the winter, so planning your visit in the right season is a must.

You can see some very nice views on a sunny day! From the parking lot you have to climb many stairs to reach the viewing tower. It’s hot inside! All the doors and windows are closed to keep out the bees (suzumebachi). The bathrooms at the parking lot were closed when we visited. Also, there is supposed to be a walking course that loops around through the forest, but it looks like it has been closed for many years.

Many steps to climb, but a great view once you get there. There used to be an elevated path/trail that continued on past the observation building but it has been closed-off. Signs warn of vipers, so best not to stray!
