The Churui Naumann’s Elephant Memorial Museum is a must-visit for anyone traveling through Makubetsu, Hokkaido. The museum commemorates the discovery of Naumann elephant fossils in Churui in 1969, one of the most significant prehistoric finds in Japan. Inside, visitors can see well-preserved fossil displays, learn about the life and environment of these ancient elephants, and explore the paleontological history of Hokkaido. Outside the museum, a life-sized statue of the Naumann elephant stands proudly, making it a great photo spot for families and history enthusiasts alike. The museum is small but informative, offering a unique blend of education and local heritage. For travelers interested in Hokkaido’s history beyond its landscapes and modern culture, this museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s ancient past.
View on GoogleIt is a fairly small museum, but it has quite a lot of information and exhibits. I didn't even know that an "Asian woolly mammoth" existed.

View on GoogleIt is located beside a roadside station, and the exhibits convey the excitement when the fossils were accidentally unearthed. I had been looking at Naumann elephant skeleton displays in museums around the country without knowing they were replicas of the skeleton here. (It seems like an area where something else might turn up someday.)
