Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu

Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu

Ski resort

★ 4.52,724 reviews

Full-service ski area with shops, eateries, lessons, a snow park & hiking in the summer.

The largest in scale among Niseko's four ski areas, with a history of over 50 years. At the base spreads a town of accommodations, hot springs, restaurants, and more, so après-ski is well covered. The lower section has dynamic courses with varied terrain. The middle section has gently sloping course layouts through a forest of Erman's birch (dakekanba). And the upper section, around the 1,000 m plateau, goes beyond the tree line, letting you ski on open, spacious burns. From beginners to advanced skiers, from groomed courses to powder courses, this resort lets you enjoy it all.

Some many people say “NiSeKo Is OvErCrOwDeD aNd ExPeNsIvE !!!” If you got some street smarts about you it’s a very quiet resort even on epic Japow days. Some lifts do get busy especially the pizza box chairs ontop, but deal with it, take a beer and chill with your mates, you’re on holidays no need to rush, you can find powder stashes a week after no new snow. I mean Niseko peaked 20+ years ago, but it is still pretty hard to beat, world class resort. Niseko is highly susceptible to wind holds on blowy blizzardy days, they mostly shut uptop. It is what it is, just go to Rusutsu on those days or take a rest day, more powder the next day. Look sunny days or bluebirds are rare so you gotta learn to ride in poor visibility, some low light lenses and you get use to it. But when you get a bluebird and pow, enjoy it, savour it Niseko is such a rad place to shred. The powder, terrain and backcountry is unmatched. For some it’s a little mellow steepness wise, but just have to pick better lines and maintain good speed. There is steep stuff but not in the resort. If you want steep stuff go to the Nagano region. Lift tickets are super reasonable and season passes are affordable. Powder can be slightly better in Northern Hokkaido but its still is absolutely mind blowingly amazing. Nightlife is the best you’ll get in Hokkaido outside of Sapporo. Lifties are all local Japanese kids, or golden oldies, they keep the vibes high. Food and drinks aren’t overpriced and healthy. Ski patrol wont help you if you are off piste or backcountry, anywhere in Japan, just keep that in mind, otherwise super helpful and passionate ski patrol. Best of all, like majority of Japan, its super safe, no risk of being mugged or being assaulted, by law no narcotics are allowed in Japan so people are well behaved….. generally. Alcohol is cheap and tourists majority are well behaved. Highly recommend Niseko as a snowsports destination.

Niseko is a very unique place. The mountain is fantastic. The snow is exceptional and the off piste skiing incredible. Its around Christmas time. Due to heavy snow the lift is close and had some deep backcountry snow.

I visited Tokyu Grand Hirafu as a Japanese tourist and really enjoyed my skiing experience here. Niseko is often talked about as an international resort, but as a domestic visitor, I still found it very comfortable and easy to enjoy. The snow quality was excellent, light and soft, just as expected. The slopes are well maintained, and there is a good balance of courses for beginners, intermediate skiers, and advanced riders. Even during the busy winter season, the lift operations were smooth, and staff were polite and efficient. One thing that impressed me was how well organized the resort is. Signage is clear, facilities are clean, and the overall flow from the base area to the lifts feels well thought out. It made skiing stress-free, even on a crowded day. The view from the slopes is another highlight. On a clear day, being able to ski while seeing Mt. Yotei in the distance is a special experience. After skiing, the Hirafu area offers many dining options, so it’s easy to relax and enjoy a good meal. Overall, Tokyu Grand Hirafu is a ski resort I would happily recommend, both to Japanese travelers and to friends visiting Japan from overseas.

Great place to ski and it is very accessible, as you are skiing down you get one of the best views of the mountain and snow. The slopes are pretty wide and spacious, makes you feel extra safe. Will definitely come back.
