Quiet, excellent displays and explanations about local wildlife, geology, history of indigenous peoples, cultures and timelines. Several ancient to semi modern boats were on site, and the clothes and artifacts were enthralling. Definitely recommend if you love learning.
View on GoogleA thoroughly enjoyable museum that is well laid out across three floors. It explains the history of the area, from fishing and animals to culture and transport. About two-thirds of the captions are in Japanese but there’s a fantastic online guide in English (and other languages) that can be accessed using a QR code and free WiFi. Definitely access this because almost every cabinet has a thorough explanation and the English is excellent. The gardens are nice and there’s a good view of the river/lake. Parking is free outside and there are toilets inside.
View on GoogleNice and cozy little museum. You can go through its entirety in 2 hours. We went during winter so the walk in the nearby park and seeing the frozen lake was a treat too.
View on GoogleOn a recent trip to Hokkaido, I detoured through Kushiro on my way to Sapporo specifically to visit this museum because I had heard such good things and it was well worth it. The exhibits are well-thought out and uniquely displayed, especially the natural history and Ainu culture sections. I was just really amazed. I live near a well-regarded natural history museum in the US and I really enjoyed this one more because of how it was put together. And I learned so much about the area and its history. I was also really happy to use the English guide. Right behind the museum is Lake Harutori. The museum, followed by a walk around the lake and its nature trails, was a perfect way to spend my time. I used a taxi from the station to get there and a GO taxi to get to my next destination, the Kushiro Art Museum. Honestly, the vibe in Kushiro is great and I wish I had spent more time there.
