We visited the Furetoi Tenbōdai Observation Deck as part of our Hokkaido 179 goal to explore every roadside station and viewpoint on the island, and it truly impressed us with its stunning panoramic views. Perched high above the surrounding landscape, the wooden deck provides a breathtaking outlook over rolling fields, forests, and distant mountain ranges. The well-maintained path leading to the observation area made the short walk enjoyable, and there are benches where you can pause and soak in the scenery. The fresh, crisp air of eastern Hokkaido added to the serene, almost meditative atmosphere. The viewing spot is ideal for photography—or simply taking a quiet moment to appreciate nature’s beauty. Friendly caretakers on-site shared tips about the best vantage points. Adding this stop to our Hokkaido adventure was a refreshing and memorable experience.

Free observation deck on a small hill overlooking the Sea of Ohkotsu. The deck is a short walk along the railway line from the Hamakoshimizu roadside station. You 360° views over the surrounding countryside and sea. Along the coast the views stretch from Shiretoko to Abashiri. And you'll probably have it to yourself, so glad I stopped.

Not many people there, more relaxing view of the sea and also the lakes nearby. In mid September, the wind is cool and strong.
