Sakura Falls was one of the more memorable stops on our trip. We were fortunate enough to visit during the salmon run, and watching the fish leap upstream against the current was genuinely captivating; it's one thing to see it on a nature documentary, but quite another to witness it in person just metres away. The falls themselves are picturesque, with the water crashing down over the rocks and a fine mist drifting through the air on sunnier days. The surrounding area is peaceful and well maintained, making it easy to spend a good half hour or more just taking it all in, whether you're watching the salmon or simply enjoying the scenery and the sound of rushing water. It's a great spot for families, nature lovers or anyone wanting a break from the usual sightseeing. Best of all, it costs nothing to visit, so it's an easy addition to any itinerary in the area. If you can time your trip to coincide with the salmon run, I'd highly recommend it; it really does add another dimension to the visit. One practical note: the toilets on site aren't great, quite an unpleasant smell, so it's best to go before or after your visit rather than relying on the facilities there.
View on GoogleSakura Falls is an absolute hidden gem and one of the most fascinating natural sights we’ve experienced in Japan. 🌊🐟 Watching the salmon leap upstream against the powerful current was simply incredible. Seeing these determined fish repeatedly launch themselves out of the water in an effort to continue their journey is both exciting and inspiring. If you’re patient, you’ll witness countless jumps, making it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike. What made the experience even better was how peaceful it was. Unlike many popular attractions, there were only a few other visitors, allowing us to enjoy the scenery without crowds or noise. If you’re exploring eastern Hokkaido, don’t miss Sakura Falls—especially during the salmon migration season. It’s a unique wildlife experience that you’ll remember long after your trip.

View on GoogleVisited in the third week of July 2026. This was one of the most memorable places I visited in Hokkaido. It felt like witnessing nature in its purest form. Watching the masu trout repeatedly leap against the waterfall, I found myself cheering for them without even realizing it. The waterfall is simply too high, and it was heartbreaking to watch their determined efforts end in failure time after time. I kept hoping that at least one fish would make it, but during the time I was there, none succeeded. For a moment, I wondered if it would be nice to have a fish ladder like the one at Otobetsu River Salmon & Trout Run Observation Facility (遠音別川サケ・マス遡上観覧施設), allowing the fish to continue upstream. But then I realized that would be interfering with nature's own way of things. I became so absorbed in watching them that I completely lost track of time. However, this is also bear country—which makes perfect sense, considering all these fish are leaping out of the water. There are warning signs asking visitors not to stay too long, and it's wise to follow that advice. This place showed me what the real Hokkaido is all about. It left a deep impression on me, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. Careful : Internet was not accessible near here. Advise you to prepare Map-code for your car navigation. One tip for drivers: the MAPCODE (444 228 457*42) that I found online only took me to a point near the waterfall, but it was blocked by the forest and there was no view at all. If this happens, don't turn back. Continue driving a little farther to reach the parking area. After parking, walk back in the direction you came for a short distance, and you'll find the waterfall.
