This is a University of Tokyo facility that has continued archaeological research in Tokoro since 1957. You can observe and compare designs from various periods: Jomon, Epi-Jomon, Satsumon, and Okhotsk pottery. The explanatory panels are detailed, as you would expect from a university facility. It was unstaffed when I visited, but I could look around freely. I think most people will be fully satisfied with just the “Tokoro Archaeological Site Museum,” but those who want more or would like to see more pottery should visit this place too.
View on GoogleIt is a slightly unusually shaped building that looks a bit worn out. Admission is free, or rather, there is nobody there. You write your name, put on slippers, and switch on the lights yourself to enter. I visited in November, so it was cold inside. Lots of pottery, stone tools, and other items are lined up in the plain exhibition room.
View on GoogleA museum located at the end of the path in the forest. Write your name at the entrance, change into slippers, and head inside. The reconstructed objects and excavated finds in the neatly arranged cases feel quite new to me, even though they should belong to the same cultural sphere as my local area. If I lived here, I would make it part of my walking route. The character of the building, the smell of old concrete. I think it is worth a look for anyone interested in old buildings too.
View on GoogleA museum with an end-of-the-world atmosphere The exhibits were very ordinary. There was nobody inside, and the lights weren't on. It had an apocalyptic atmosphere, as though everyone but me had vanished from the world, and that is a major attraction you won't find in other museums. Do enjoy that atmosphere!
View on GoogleFree admission. Write down your name and where you're from when entering. You can view valuable excavated artifacts from the Okhotsk culture. You can also learn how an archaeological site of global significance came to be discovered in 常呂.
