While staying at サロマ湖鶴雅リゾート, I came here while exploring the neighborhood after checking in. You can look around for free. The remains were better preserved than I expected, and I could feel the history.
View on GoogleA variety of prehistoric objects excavated in 常呂, from the Jomon, Epi-Jomon, Satsumon, and Okhotsk cultures, are displayed, with explanations of the cultures and lifestyles revealed by them. In 常呂, pottery and other objects from various periods have been discovered in the same (or very nearby) locations, and the changes over time are interesting. The connections and exchanges with the continent, サハリン, and elsewhere are also very fascinating. This facility is inside “遺跡の森.” Around it, excavated dwelling sites and reconstructed pit houses have been arranged as “縄文の村,” “続縄文の村,” and “擦文の村.
View on GoogleA building at the back of the parking lot across the road from サロマ湖鶴雅リゾート. Adults: 280円; free for those aged 70 and over and junior high school students or younger. It isn't very large, but besides the exhibits, a video is shown in the central area, making things easy to understand.
View on GoogleIt is a round building. Admission was 280円. Archaeological materials excavated from sites in the 常呂 area of 北見市 are displayed here. The exhibition room isn't large, but it contains many interesting materials, including Important Cultural Properties.
View on GoogleA museum at the entrance to ところ遺跡の森. They show you an introductory video of about 10 minutes. When I think of Hokkaido's indigenous peoples, I picture the Ainu, but I learned for the first time that there were others too. In the forest, there are pit-house sites and opportunities to enjoy abundant nature, so I was very satisfied. Insect repellent spray is essential if you visit. There are lots of bees and mosquitoes.
