Unassuming and lovely
View on GoogleA few minutes' walk from a parking lot that also has toilets The path is flat and easy to walk, but there were hardly any tourists. As I headed there thinking a bear might appear, a deer came running toward me along the path I had walked. When I stared it down, it veered onto a side path, but watch out for wildlife。。 The station itself had a lovely atmosphere and was very nice I was surprised that the track switch could be moved
View on GoogleI stopped by during a trip to Hokkaido. There is a parking lot at Horoka Snow Removal Station, and it is about a 3-minute walk from there. Horoka Station is located 69km from Obihiro Station, the starting point of the Shihoro Line, and 7km from its terminus, Tokachi-Mitsumata Station, and opened in Showa 14. Later, in Showa 53, train service on the 18.6km section between Nukabira Station and Tokachi-Mitsumata Station was discontinued and replaced by buses, ending Horoka's role as a station. 48 years have passed since the service was discontinued, and only the platform and tracks remain now, but amazingly, you can even move the points manually. Many arch bridges remain, including the Third Otofuke River Bridge, Nukabira River Bridge, and Sannosawa Bridge, but having a surviving station site is very precious. The former Shihoro Line trackbed remains as a path, so you can also walk along it. If you are heading to Mikuni Pass, do stop by.
View on GoogleThe former Horoka Station site, which preserves traces of the old Japanese National Railways Shihoro Line, is a nostalgic spot with a platform and tracks remaining in a quiet forest. It is carefully maintained, and you can stroll around while soaking up the atmosphere of those days. It is especially beautiful during the fresh-green and autumn-foliage seasons, and wonderfully photogenic. With abundant nature all around and bear-warning signs, it is a place to experience the remote wilderness feel characteristic of Hokkaido.
View on GoogleIf you go a little farther along the gravel path beside the snow removal station, you will see “The Changes of Horoka Station.” Continue to the right, and the station name sign is on your left. The quiet tracks and the green forest were beautiful. I'm glad I could look around without encountering a brown bear.
