I stopped by during a trip to Hokkaido. This arch bridge is 3km from the Nukabira hot spring area, was completed in 1955年, and is 40m long. It connects to the Lake Nukabira walking trail, and you can walk across the bridge. There is also a spacious parking lot, and a rail trolley operates on the opposite side of the bridge. After crossing the bridge, there is a path down to Lake Nukabira, but the footing is poor because of thinned timber and stones, so please be careful. The beautiful shape of the arch bridge is better seen from the shore of Lake Nukabira. Farther away, you can also see the Taushubetsu River Bridge. If you have time, take Strap Rail’s trolley-driving experience on the abandoned railway, where you can experience the vast nature of Daisetsuzan National Park, forest bathing, and the original railway landscape, bringing the former Japanese National Railways Shihoro Line closer to you.

The guide on the Taushubetsu Bridge tour mentioned it, so I came to see it after riding the rail trolley accessible from the same parking lot. A little beyond the parking lot, there are stairs down to the foot of the bridge. Once down, you can look up at the Sannosawa Bridge. Heading toward the lake, just as the guide said, I could see Taushubetsu Bridge 4 kilometers away. Even in Hokkaido, I think being able to look around across more than 4 kilometers of almost flat terrain in Japan is a rather unusual experience.

I saw a sign and stopped by on the way to the Taushubetsu River Bridge. After crossing the bridge, the wooden stairs down to the lake are very narrow, so it’s best to descend carefully. I think it’s worth stopping by if you have time. The visit took about 20 minutes from the parking lot and back.

You can walk across the bridge, but you can’t see the arches from there. You have to view it from the road bridge or go down below, but this time I had no time, so I just crossed it and left. Next time I’d like to go down and look up at it.
