The Kida Kinjiro Museum of Art, located in Iwanai, Hokkaido near Marine Park, showcases the life and works of Kinjiro Kida, one of Hokkaido’s most prominent Western-style painters. The museum features his paintings that capture the natural beauty of Iwanai and the surrounding region. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts seasonal exhibitions and special events, such as local student art shows and displays by regional artists. Visitors can also enjoy the museum’s tea lounge, “CREW,” and browse a selection of books and original merchandise at the museum shop. The building offers beautiful views of Mount Iwanai and the Sea of Japan, providing a serene environment to appreciate both art and nature. Open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m., the museum is easily accessible by car from JR Iwanai Station or on foot from Iwanai Port. The Kida Kinjiro Museum of Art is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Hokkaido’s cultural heritage and scenic landscapes.

This is a wonderful art museum that Iwanai Town can be proud of. You can enjoy the works of painter Kinjiro Kida, a master of modern Hokkaido art, up close.

An art museum dedicated to 木田金次郎 (Kinjiro Kida), one of Hokkaido’s leading painters. He was also the inspiration for the character in Takeo Arishima’s 「生まれ出ずる悩み」. It takes a little under 2 hours by car from Sapporo to 木田金次郎美術館. Niseko is the nearest place around here, but even from Niseko it is quite a distance. Kinjiro Kida was a painter who remained obscure in the provinces, partly because he did not work in the central art scene. But when you see the works in this museum, you can tell that his paintings are very good and that he was highly skilled. It is truly a pleasure to be able to see such a substantial collection of paintings in a regional area. There are also 荒井記念美術館 and 西村計雄記念美術館 partway up the mountain, so I think this is a good area for visiting art museums.

He was a painter from Iwanai. 木田金次郎美術館 opened here in Iwanai Town in 1994 (Heisei 6). It says this building opened through the collective desire for many people to learn about his works and life. Throughout his life, Kinjiro Kida continued painting Iwanai’s natural surroundings. It is not simply a place to view his paintings, but also a venue for various forms of communication with nearby facilities and local residents. The general admission fee is listed as 600 yen.

An art museum dedicated to a painter from Iwanai Town. Apparently, he was the inspiration for the character in Takeo Arishima’s 『生れ出づる悩み』. His works are powerful oil paintings depicting the sea around Iwanai Town, Niseko scenery, flowers, and more. I was moved by the story of how he started painting again despite his despair after almost all his works were destroyed in the great Iwanai fire. He created these works in a small town called Iwanai Town, and the townspeople take pride in him as their local painter. I think it is a very good art museum. There are plenty of works, and there is also a café inside. Of course, the museum shop is well stocked despite being small. If it rains while you are visiting Niseko and you find yourself wondering where to spend your time, why not come here?
