Who would have expected to find such an impressive Picasso collection in Japan? I won’t spoil the surprise of how it ended up here, but it’s well worth a 60–90 minute stopover. The Picasso pieces are only on display for three months each year—we caught the exhibit in July. Alongside it, three Japanese artists were featured, with works ranging from bold modern pieces to beautifully traditional styles. If you’re visiting with children, there’s a fun stamp passport to keep them engaged. And during the busier seasons, you can even rent out a traditional teahouse room for a unique cultural experience.

Great museum in an extremely beautiful setting.

One of the rarest places you’d expect to stumble upon the works of Pablo Picasso especially in Hokkaido. If you are visiting the Niseko,Otaru region this is a good place to spend a few hours on a rainy day. The museum closes during lunch hours , it varies from day to day so better check before visiting (adjacent to a quiet hilltop hotel there isn’t much to do or eat/drink their restaurant/cafe is closed until check-in time I suppose? )you will need a car.

一般財団法人荒井記念美術館, adjacent to いわない高原ホテル. The very impressive building houses ピカソ美術館 and 西村計雄美術館. Its collection includes over 200 prints by Picasso. Guests of いわない高原ホテル can visit for half price, 500円. Overall, perhaps the maintenance is rather neglected? Considering the location, just keeping it going must cost a great deal. Photography is not allowed inside,

場所は岩内高原ホテルに隣接しています😊 ホテルの前を通りすぎた奥にありました😅 入館料は￥１０００ですが うちは宿泊施設で半額券をいただき来館しました😊 ピカソの版画はもちろんですが 荒井さんの作品も独創的な絵画や詩、彫刻など思ってた以上の作品数でした。 今回は時間がない中で来館したので もう一度ゆっくり見に行きたいと思いました😊 岩内の山の中に こんな素敵な美術館があるなんて本当に驚きました😊
