I visited the Atsuta Park Observation Deck in Ishikari City, and I could immediately see why it was chosen as Hokkaido’s first spot in the “Lovers’ Sanctuary” project back in 2006. The atmosphere feels special, with its wide view of the coastline and the Sea of Japan stretching endlessly into the horizon. The sunset from here is especially stunning, painting the sky in warm colors that make the moment unforgettable. What makes this place stand out are the little touches for couples. There’s the “Oath Bell,” which you can ring together, and a fence where lovers leave padlocks as a symbol of their promise. Even if you’re not there with a partner, the spot has a peaceful and romantic charm that makes it a wonderful place to relax and take in the view.

The former village of 厚田 in Ishikari City. Walk up the slope from the roadside station and there's an observation deck where you can enjoy ocean views. A “Lovers' Sanctuary”??? Beautiful stained glass inspired by the sunset over the Sea of Japan is installed there.

The view was good because it was sunny, but it was a shame to see some discarded cigarette butts and such. I went to take photos of my stuffed toy, and there was nobody around early in the morning, so I could take my time.

The observation deck built on top of a hill at 厚田 fishing port in Ishikari City (the former village of 厚田), along the road commonly called オロロンライン that runs north–south along the Sea of Japan coastline, has many padlocks hanging from it like a bridge in Paris and has become a lovers' sanctuary. The scenery was very beautiful, and even lovelier at sunset. The scenery was very beautiful, and even lovelier at sunset.
