Visited during the Obon holiday. It’s at a dead end after turning off the main road onto a side street. Paid the 300円 admission fee and looked around. The interior is surprisingly small, so it’s easy to have a quick look. It has deteriorated quite a bit, but it has a nice atmosphere. The old tools and dioramas are lovely.

Admission is 300円. A former herring fishing lodge built in Meiji 32(1899年) has been turned into a museum. There are unusual items such as a wall clock with a calendar, evoking the prosperity of those days. Things to note: the roughly 500m road from the national highway to the museum is so narrow that passing another vehicle is nearly impossible, and the museum is closed for winter from 11/1〜4/30.

Coming from the Sapporo side, you first pass through central Hamamasu, then take the narrow road branching off the national highway along the shore where the slope begins. The road feels less than 4m wide, so an oncoming vehicle would be a problem. You reach the local history museum after driving less than 1km. Apparently, the 120-year-old fishing lodge had fallen into complete disrepair before being restored and opened as a local history museum. When you go inside and photograph the roof framing, you can indeed see that the roof boards and other parts use timber that looks brand new. The displays here explain the days when herring fishing was thriving. Apparently, the large quantities of herring caught were made into fertilizer or pressed for oil. Herring fishing was at its peak until around the Taisho era. The bustle seems to have ended after the last spawning shoal in Showa 29. The building is truly impressive. The posts are 8 sun or more in size, and the entrance threshold and other features show that good materials were used. Photos from its heyday show that many people worked here. Originally, people from the Shonai Domain came here after being ordered to guard the north, and it seems quite a few people from Sakata lived here. I wonder whether this Honma family was related to that famous wealthy merchant Honma family. The exhibits taught me a lot. By the way, the slippers say 「浜益村」, and it seems they are carefully using items more than 20 years old. Still, they aren’t starting to tear or anything, and they are kept clean. It’s understated, but I hope they keep it going.

You can clearly understand how the fishing lodge was built. Tools from that time are on display. The model depicting the lively atmosphere of the fishing lodge was so interesting that I found myself absorbed in it.

Visited 2025.10.14 A herring fishing lodge in such an unexpected place. Unfortunately, I happened to come on a closed day. It is preserved in very good condition. The shutters and curtains inside were lowered, with no gaps.
