A museum with an overwhelmingly Showa-era feel. Visited in the afternoon on the last day of a three-day holiday. Admission is 330円. There were about 10 visitors. The interior is quite spacious, and seeing just the marine section and art museum took more than 1 hour. If you are interested in sumo, probably +30 minutes. Besides living creatures, there are exhibits on Hiroo's fishing industry, geography, history, the former Hiroo Line, and the Golden Road. As I am interested in local culture, I learned a great deal. There is also a gallery of paintings by Naoyuki Sakamoto, where you can enjoy the many faces of the Hidaka Mountains and Tokachi Plain. One thing that concerned me a little was how old the exhibits are. In particular, the history of Hiroo ends in the 1970s and has not been updated for decades. Since the town has such a wonderful facility, I hope it puts more effort into this museum.
View on GoogleThis museum is only open on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. The facilities are old overall, but it feels like they are maintained with sensible choices about what to keep. The exhibits are old overall, but I think they are well organized. The main content was exhibits on yokozuna Hokkai and Naoyuki Sakamoto, and the nature of Hiroo. I recommend visiting if the timing works out.
View on GoogleA wonderful place. You can follow the journey of Hokutoumi, who became a yokozuna, starting from his days as Hoshi. I like that instead of going out of his way to build a museum bearing his own name, the exhibits are part of his hometown's museum. Love for his hometown. You can also feel how much the people of Hiroo love Hoshi. There are heaps of old magazines, posters, articles, and certificates, but the unfortunate thing is that there are no new materials. I found myself thinking it would be nice if they bought teacups or memorabilia listed on Mercari and displayed them. It is a little away from the town center, and while Santa Land is nice too, a visit here can be moving. Be careful, as opening days are limited.
