Part of the 7 scenic stops enroute to kushiro. Access is convenient, views are definitely worth the time.

View on Google🌊 Cape Kiritappu Observatory It's about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the observatory, but the path goes up and down and some spots have unstable footing, so I recommend comfortable walking shoes rather than sandals or heels. From the observatory you can take in a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean, and if you're lucky you can see sea otters swimming near the shore, which makes the visit even more enjoyable. The walking trails are well maintained, and it seems like a spot where you can enjoy different scenery each season. Recommended for anyone who wants to really feel the sea of eastern Hokkaido (Doto).
View on GoogleA cape in Kiritappu, Hamanaka Town, eastern Hokkaido A cape of sheer cliffs jutting out into the Pacific Ocean✌️ Depending on the weather, it gets wrapped in fog. That day I got to experience 'Kiritappu' true to its name💦 The fog happened to be so thick I could barely see ahead even on the drive... but hey, I like days like that too👍 There are walking trails and viewing areas, but you need to watch your step. The area around Cape Kiritappu is known as a spot for observing wild sea otters. Apparently you might see them year-round, but since they're wild animals, it's not guaranteed. Binoculars or a telephoto lens might make it easier to spot them. I did sort of see one that day, but the fog was so thick it just looked like a black shadow🦦 I was happy to see slaty-backed gulls mating. Next time I'd like to come on a sunny day. Even when the weather's bad, there are lots of birds and deer along the way, so it's a fun place to feel nature. Apparently there's a hot spring nearby too, so next time I want to go there as well.
View on GoogleYou can view Yuwakimisaki Lighthouse and Cape Tokkari from the side. From around here too, I was able to see wild sea otters and seals through binoculars🦦 Wild sea otters swim surprisingly fast, and seals stay underwater longer than sea otters, so spotting each of them might be pretty tough. The observatory building was off-limits.
