Hakodate Ramen Horan is a long-established ramen shop in Matsukaze-cho, Hakodate, Hokkaido, and a popular spot that has kept its traditional Hakodate flavor since it opened in 1950 (Showa 25). Easily accessible within walking distance of JR Hakodate Station, it has long been loved by locals and tourists alike. Its signature is the clear-broth Hakodate salt ramen, characterized by a light soup that draws out its umami slowly from only pork bones and chicken bones, with no vegetables. The transparent soup has a clean, old-fashioned taste, and is said to bring a sense of nostalgia and deep umami with the first sip. It pairs well with the thin straight noodles, and has long been supported as a bowl you never tire of. Salt ramen…

The ramen was excellent. We were looking for Hakodare Ramen for lunch, and we were the only non-locals in the place. It was a very small place and we could watch the chef prepare the food.
View on GoogleShio ramen Since 1950. Tried the teishoku set: shio ramen, shumai, pickles and rice for 1250円。 The broth is not too strong, not too salty, very clear broth. Doesn't seem like hakodate style uses lard at all. Tastes like food my grandma would like. Overall not bad for 1950.
View on GoogleCame in at 12:45 on a Friday. The restaurant was half full of locals, mostly salarymen on their lunch break. I was seated immediately and ordered the Shio Ramen and the Shumai. The ramen is delicious, it’s a light and delicate yet hearty salt flavor. I’ve had ramen up and down all over Japan for the last two years and shio ramen often doesn’t satisfy me, however this was a great bowl. I’m not going to tell you it’s the best Shio ramen ever, but it’s the best Shio ramen I’ve ever had (I also just got to Hakodate 15 min before this meal, this is my first Shio in Hakodate). At one point I added some of the black pepper to the bowl, which it didn’t need, but went together perfectly. The chashu is leaner pork and not super fatty and tender. But it isn’t dry, and it isn’t tough. This is pretty standard chashu in a more Chinese style ramen. I liked it! The shumai are actually phenomenal, I was really impressed. Very meaty and moist with great flavor. I urge you to order the shumai if you dine here. Also, if you’re solo (like I was) don’t miss the teishoku. They offer a set meal of Shio ramen, a small bowl of rice, 3 shumai, and what I believe are some pickles. It’s 1170 yen. I didn’t see this until I overheard someone say teishoku so I checked the menu. My Shio ramen (710 yen) + one order of Shumai (5 pcs, 750 yen) came out to 1460. While not a huge difference in price, I think I would have just preferred three Shumai. They’re super delicious but I didn’t need all of that food lol. Overall the food isn’t very heavy, so even though I ate everything I feel fine to go walk around, not bloated and sick like I just faced a hakata tonkotsu / butter corn miso and 5 gyoza. Anyway the food here is good, it might not be everyone’s favorite, but if anyone gives a one star review they’re either having a bad day or they just don’t get it. Gochisosama!
View on GoogleA typical ramen store. The ramen is so so, if u are not really hungry, can skip the ramen but order the Siu Mai ( Xiu Mai, 烧卖, pork dumpling). It is nice surprisingly. Each portion has 5x dumpling. The fried pork is oily, can try but not too much. Ramen, salt and miso are so so. If u really want to order, i recommend the miso ramen instead of salt ramen.
View on GoogleMy first time to try salt ramen and it was yum! The taste is special and I like it. We were the only foreigners in the restaurant at the time. Many locals were having quick lunch there. I heard 2 locals ordered wonton ramen but couldn't find this option on the menu. Secret menu?
