A reconstruction is on display. You can't go inside. There's space to park a car nearby.

Transcribing the explanatory text in front of the Western-style sailing ship "Hakodate Maru." It reads: 『In month 3 of Ansei year 1, the shogunate concluded the Japan–US Treaty of Peace and Amity, leading to the opening of the two ports of Shimoda and Hakodate. The Hakodate Magistrate's Office needed its own vessel to guard Ezo and negotiate with foreign ships following the opening of the port, so it applied to the shogunate for permission to build one in Hakodate. Permission was granted, and shipwright Tsuzuki Toyoji was ordered to build it. It was completed in month 11 of Ansei year 4 and named Hakodate Maru. This "Hakodate Maru," which made a great contribution to Japanese shipbuilding, was the first Western-style sailing ship built in Japan from an original Japanese design. Its construction in Hakodate (函館) by people of Hakodate (函館) is deeply significant. The Hakodate Maru currently on display was reconstructed for exhibition at the Seikan Expo held in Showa year 63. Materials supplied by Tsuzuki Ichiro, Hirosaki Municipal Library, and Hakodate City Library』. ...The first Western-style sailing ship built in Japan from an original design... that's amazing.

A sailing ship reconstructed for the Seikan Expo. There's only the display and an explanatory sign.

It felt like it had been casually left in a corner of the harbor. I wish it were somewhere easier to visit.
