Great place to see beautiful Japanese architecture. Good to go and understand a bit of Japan's history. Entry fee was 500 yen per adult.

View on Google2024年2月29日 The current 箱館奉行所 faithfully reconstructs the building's central section based on remains confirmed through archaeological excavations and late-Edo-period plans. Inside, the administrative spaces actually used at the magistrate's office have been recreated, allowing visitors to experience its appearance as a government institution of the time, including the formal reception rooms, great hall, and officials' offices. The exhibition rooms also introduce the construction of 五稜郭, the role of the 箱館 magistrate, and late-Edo diplomacy and military affairs through documents and models, providing a multidimensional understanding of how 五稜郭 was operated.
View on GoogleYou needed a ticket to go up to the observation deck of 五稜郭タワー, but anyone can enter 五稜郭 for free. Apparently there's a fee to enter the magistrate's office. It was a very nice place where you could feel 函館's history.
View on GoogleIt was beautifully reconstructed, and the great hall with its series of rooms was impressive. I'm glad I paid to go inside. You couldn't climb the drum platform at the tower; there was only an explanation. Displays covered the reconstruction process and its origins. The indoor exhibits seemed to be in Japanese only. With so many overseas visitors, I thought they should provide paid explanatory devices or something similar.
