We waited for about half an hour. Deciding what to order was difficult. We ended with 2 curries, 1 beef stew combo meal and a crab coquette to try. I wish we had opted for the special instead of one of the curries. Meiji curry was mild, but still tasty. French curry was more delicious but I still taste boxed seasonings. Beef stew was nice too. The salad has too much dressing on it and nothing else was really remarkable. But the interior is historic, the restaurant is really clean and proper and we did enjoy our meal there.
View on GoogleI had the half and half curry (2,200Yen- comes with a little salad and rice) which allowed me to try the meiji pork curry and the British beef curry (the darker gravy). To clarify, I am typically not a fan of Japanese curry but the curry here is thicker, less sweet (the sweetness is still evident but it’s not like the usual Japanese curry that is mostly just sweetness without any other flavour), and has a spice kick that I appreciated! Also braised meat (pork and beef) goes SO MUCH better with curry than tonkatsu- I can never understand the fried pork cutlet combination…. The rice here is also excellent as Japanese rice goes. The meat itself is also very tender and extremely tasty. I wouldn’t say the curry tastier than singapore style curry (my personal preference) which ranks top for me but as far as Japanese curry go, this is the only kind I enjoy. A perfect stop IF you do go to mt Hakodate for the night viewing (which I don’t recommend unless you come from a village and have never seen city lights….)
View on GoogleThis Western restaurant in Hakodate is apparently its oldest dating back to 1879 CE when it started out as a Russian eatery and bakery. As a tourist and first timer in Hakodate, I naturally ordered its Russian Food Set comprising a Russian plate of beef stroganoff & croquette, some Borsht soup, a fried Pirozhki bread bun with "curry" filling, a soft bread, some Russian salad, and a Gotoken Quard cake - by the way, the restaurant also specialises in many versions of curry, from Japanese to Nepalese to the English version. And his was its Russian Food Set? It was certainly worth it - especially its stroganoff and croquette, and its Borsht soup. I also ordered to go with my Russian Food Set, a Bakumatsu dark beer that was very good. Service here was "okay" and the dining ambience was good enough. By the way, the building in which the restaurant is located also houses a bakery section with a sort of museum section therein.
View on GoogleAfter coming down from Mt Hakodate, came across the main branch and just knew we had to order curry for dinner as reward. Ordered the half and half, and was surprised to find out which I preferred more. The wine tasting set went superbly well with the curry and I know now where my next bottle from Hokkaido will be from. We were too stuffed to get dessert, but knowing that Gotoken also does sweets we'll come back and try next time. PS if you miss your chance to buy the Gotoken pre-packaged curry here, you can also find them at the airport. I bought extras just in case 😂
View on GoogleI wanted to have a sea food curry so I went to Gotoken. They had a scallop curry but unfortunately the dashi had beef in it. I opted instead for a shrimp gratin and crab croquettes. The croquettes were delicious although I didn't really feel the crab. The gratin was delicious and very cheesy. Thumbs up to their garam masala also. You have to try it if you like spices, it tastes amazing!
