Former Hakodate Branch Office of Hokkaido Government is a small Western-style wooden government building completed in 1909, once serving as the local branch office of the Hokkaido government. With its classical portico and Corinthian-style columns, it reflects the effort to project authority and modern governance during the late Meiji period. Because of its historical and architectural value, the building was designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Hokkaido. The structure was restored in 1982 and today houses Jolly Jellyfish Motomachi Park, a café that gives the historic building a contemporary public function. However, during our visit the café was closed for the winter season. According to the official notice posted on the door, it is closed from 21 October 2025 until 20 April 2026, and visitors are directed to the Jolly Jellyfish main store during this period. As a result, the interior was not accessible and the building could be enjoyed only from the outside. Even so, it remains an appealing stop within Motomachi Park. Its pale blue façade, balanced proportions, and compact classical form make it especially photogenic, particularly in winter, and it offers a quiet reminder of Hakodate’s early administrative history and Western architectural influence.
View on GoogleThe place is colonial and yet aesthetically decorated. It nows operates as a coffee / lunchette. The staff is nice and the atmosphere quite relaxing. Perfecto make it your Tea/Coffee break among the long and slope-ry walks in Hakodate.
