As a big Chiyonofuji fan, this place was a delight. Great displays and momentos. No English available so you will need a reasonable level of Japanese or a good translator.
View on GoogleA memorial museum for the two great yokozuna born in 福島町. It is an irresistible place, especially for the generation who remember 千代の富士 (Wolf) during his active career. Inside, lavish ceremonial sumo aprons, championship trophies, the People's Honor Award certificate, and more are lined up, reaffirming the magnitude of his achievements. Exhibits conveying the bond between him and his mentor, 千代の山, and the recreated sumo ring of 九重部屋 are immensely impressive. The depth of sumo and the extraordinary efforts of these two men came through and deeply moved me. It is right next to the roadside station 「横綱の里ふくしま」, and access by bus from in front of 木古内駅 is convenient too.
View on GoogleWhen you think about it, it's amazing that as many as 2 yokozuna were born in 福島町. You can look back on their careers alongside footage from the time, so I think sumo fans would love it. There is also a large sumo ring on the first floor. It seems the wrestlers from 九重部屋 also hold a training camp in 福島町 every year.
View on GoogleWhen I think of a great yokozuna of the Showa era, 千代の富士 comes to mind. I heard there was a memorial museum for yokozuna 千代の富士, so I parked at the roadside station next door and went over. The place is also called the home of yokozuna, and apparently 2 yokozuna came from this town, 福島町. Before 千代の富士, there was a yokozuna named 千代の山. There was plenty of material, and I gained a deeper understanding of 千代の富士. I felt that there probably won't ever be a wrestler who surpasses yokozuna 千代の富士.
View on GoogleI also visited 「横綱千代の山・千代の富士記念館」 at the same time. You can watch precious footage from the past, and it is very absorbing. Above all, 千代の富士's finely trained physique can only be described as overwhelming. There was also footage of him playing golf on a golf course, and his presence was so incredible that it was like watching a muscular monster play. The exhibits are very extensive, and this is a place you can enjoy more than you might expect.
