I came here for the first time with a coworker. I felt like having soba, and while looking for a restaurant we came across 八寳. I ordered the pork rice bowl and soba “mini butadon set ➕ large hot soba”. My coworker ordered the “mini pork kimchi rice bowl set”. The broth for the kake soba was delicious and suited my taste, and above all, the butadon was even tastier than I imagined. My coworker praised it too. The nori between the rice and pork brings out the flavor even more. The building has character and feels very well suited to Esashi. The atmosphere inside was nice too. 八寳! I would definitely like to visit again if I get the chance.

I visited for lunch. A local told me it used to be a sushi restaurant, and the interior is entirely Japanese in style and full of character—a lovely soba shop. I had ika ten soba, made with thin sarashina soba that was easy to eat, and the freshly fried squid tempura was delicious and satisfying. Esashi is famous for nishin soba, so I plan to try it on my next visit.

2026.6 Return visit There was a rather cheeky menu item called “katsu curry soba”, so I ordered it, along with a small rice. The thick broth has enough dashi flavor to hold its own against the curry. Is the katsu pork shoulder loin? It has some fat too, which I like. After finishing the noodles, I put the katsu I had saved on the rice and poured more broth over it, finishing with a makeshift katsu curry. Ah, I am full! 2026.4 Esashi is a town that prospered through herring fishing. So I had nishin soba. The broth is light with a clear dashi flavor, and delicious. The herring has no fishy smell, the little bones are not bothersome, and it is delicious too. The soba retains its aroma and firmness even in hot broth, which is nice. Someone next to me ordered a set with katsutoji, and it was quite a generous portion. Maybe I will order that next time?

Coming into Esashi from Kaminokuni on Route 228, turn right at the “江差市街” sign. It is on the right, just under 1km farther, a little past Tsuruha Drug. A friendly staff member welcomes you when you enter. It was starting to feel like autumn that day but was still hot, so I was in the mood for cold soba and ordered “ika ten oroshi soba”. The cold, chewy soba, freshly fried tender squid tempura, grated daikon, and chopped cucumber make for a refreshing dish. The broth is a little light, perhaps because it is poured over the noodles, and goes well with the soba.

A soba shop with very generous portions. My previous visit was 2025.7.20, and this visit was 2025.10.25. My wife had the same tenzaru soba as last time, while I had katsu curry soba, something you would expect to find but rarely do, with a small rice.
