Heisei Rock stands out for its distinct shape and striking presence along the rocky coast. It’s a perfect complement to the nearby Itsukushima Shrine torii, creating a scenic pairing of natural and spiritual landmarks. The rock’s rugged texture and unusual contours make it a favorite spot for photography, especially when the sunlight hits the stone just right. We visited Heisei Rock while exploring Esashi as part of our Hokkaido 179 travel goal, and it provided a moment of quiet reflection as we admired the interplay between the rock, the sea, and the shrine nearby. The area around the rock is accessible on foot and offers small viewpoints where visitors can pause and enjoy the panoramic scenery. Its location near the torii also gives a sense of cultural context, as both the shrine and the rock are part of the local landscape that blends natural formations with spiritual significance. The surrounding sea breeze, waves, and open horizon enhance the serene atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for contemplative moments or photography.

Heishi Rock is on the coast of western Hokkaido. It stands along the approach to Itsukushima Shrine in Esashi. Its name apparently comes from its shape resembling an upside-down bottle. This was a place where I felt a powerful presence, as though the rock absorbed energy from the sea and released it onto the land. It gives you something like the sea’s gentleness, strength, and vitality. A sake flask that never runs dry brings happiness to people. Like a mother, it seemed to bestow unconditional love.

I wonder if there are any other places in Hokkaido with a torii in the sea? The waves were a little rough that day, making for a nice atmosphere.
