A very interesting (and free) museum in the town’s former school. There’s an extensive history of the area, told through belongings and artefacts, through displays about the people, the fishing industry and the transport challenges, and through detailed captions (some in English - Google Lens can help with others). The man in the office was friendly and spoke some English, having stayed in Britain before. A really good way to spend an hour learning about this part of the island and the importance of its coast. There’s a toilet.

After parking in the parking lot 🅿️🚗 and approaching the museum, you see a pale beige, circular building ☺️ . The entrance and exit are on the right side of this circle. The parking area can accommodate about 10 cars too. The names of the local-history museum and fisheries hall are attached vertically. Looking at the materials, I wondered ⁉️ why the museum's name was ほろいずみ, but えりも町's former name was 幌泉町 👀‼️. It says they named it ほろいずみ so the hardships of the past would not be forgotten 🆗. Ainu materials, greening projects, and local performing arts 襟裳神楽 and えりも駒踊り are also introduced 👏. The fisheries hall introduces the fishing industry, starting with kombu harvesting, えりも町's main industry, and kombu ecology 👏.

This facility is free to visit. It explains えりも町's history and industries, particularly kombu, in detail. Real kombu is displayed too, so I think it's worth visiting. At the entrance is 龍神様, which drifted here following the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Along with exhibits of えりも町's local folk materials, traditional festivals, and customs, the fishing history was impressive. Large pieces of kombu with their color removed are also displayed.

There is a local-history museum introducing えりも町's nature and history, and a fisheries hall covering fishing, with free admission. The exhibits of local history, such as 幌泉会所, 黄金道路, 猿留山道, and the greening of 百人浜, were interestingly presented.
