I visited for the first time around 11:50 on 1/24(土). A small diner tucked away in a residential neighborhood. I had visited before, but it was already closed for the year-end/New Year holidays. This was another attempt. I arrived first and checked the opening-hours sign at the entrance… the wording made me think Saturdays were closed…. A little later, a second customer arrived. I asked, and apparently they had been a regular for 10 years and confirmed Saturday opening was fine. When I asked for recommendations, they said ginger pork, katsudon… everything was delicious(lol). Reassured, I waited in my car. The parking in front fits a maximum of 5 cars. Street parking is absolutely impossible It opened at exactly 12:00. Everyone waiting was a regular and ordered verbally before sitting down. The owner asked someone who looked like a student, “Your usual?” It seems like a warm diner rooted in the community. There do seem to be many schools nearby. This time I had 「カツ丼(並)¥780」. An enormous bowl, miso soup with a small amount of wakame & green onion, and pickles. The photo may not convey it, but it’s a very large portion. There are two cutlets, and probably 400g of rice, perhaps more(it was heavy). I asked the staff how much rice there was, but they didn’t know… not sure if that’s good or bad…. The flavor is light and there’s slightly less sauce. But with 2 cutlets, even the rice without sauce is easy to eat. Still, it’s simply a lot…. I understood why a customer who arrived later ordered 「カツ丼(小)」…. The only other ingredient is onion, and the egg is fairly firmly cooked. It feels like an ordinary, nostalgic katsudon. The standout features are surely the portion size and value for money. True to its name, it was a student-friendly diner.

I had known for a long time that this place was in my everyday area, but the timing never worked out for a visit. I arrived just before 13時半, barely before lunch service ended. When I slid the door open with a rattling noise to enter, there were about 5 customers and 2 staff inside, and everyone stared at me! The strange scene made me think, “(Did I do something wrong?)”, but everyone soon returned to their own business. Since I didn’t understand the system here, I sat at the table right by the entrance even though no one said “welcome” or “please choose any seat.” Nervously wondering if that was okay, I checked the menu to see what they had. Thinking I wouldn’t finish anything too large, I intended to order 「生姜焼き 150g」. When I asked, “Can I order?”, the staff said, “Yes, go ahead,” while staying in the kitchen. About 3 seconds later, I realized, “(Oh! This is a place where the staff don’t come over to take your order!)”, and called out my order loudly. Somehow I got the order through. They said, “Water is self-service, help yourself here,” so I fetched a glass and went to pour water from the insulated container on the table, but it contained tea. It was very cold and refreshing. The food took less than 5 minutes to arrive. It looked delicious and was generously portioned. Above all, there was actually quite a lot of white rice. It was a satisfying meal. It was easy to eat enthusiastically without being greasy, and whenever I wanted tea, I could refill straight from the pot. I need lots of fluids when eating, so I thought this was a quietly nice service. I ended up drinking about 5 glasses. The rice was a little soggy, which was disappointing, but overall I was very satisfied. On a first visit, you might not know what to do, but once you experience it and understand what kind of place it is, there may be few places this comfortable. I’d like to come again if I have the chance. Summary This place seems primarily aimed at regulars such as nearby residents and students at local universities. But it isn’t exclusive, and neither of the two staff was unfriendly. I was just getting scared on my own. When you enter, it’s best to say something yourself, such as “There are 〇 of us, is there room?” or “Are you still open?” If you stay silent, they’ll assume you’re a regular who knows the system and won’t ask anything. Once inside, sit wherever you like. Then look at the menu, decide what to order, and call out your order from your seat loudly enough for the staff to hear! Tea is self-service, so take a glass from the glass holder near the counter seats. Every table has an insulated container, so no worries. After eating, go to the register, tell them yourself what you ordered, and pay.(No order slip is left on the table) Say “Thank you for the meal!” and leave. That’s all.

I ordered a large katsudon. I didn’t hear the cutlet frying, so perhaps it had been fried in advance? The taste was sweet, like oyakodon. It would have been better if the sauce reached the rice at the bottom! Partway through, I thought of adding ichimi, but when I picked up the one on the table, its best-before date was 2017年, so I stopped… The pickles are salty. Something was floating in the water… Overall, I probably won’t return.

I came when I was so hungry I felt like I was dying. Sasami katsu set with 3 pieces for 800円+large serving(about 500 grams?)180円=980円, god-tier value The sasami katsu was about 1.5 times the size of Hotto Motto’s fried white fish, and personally it was just the right amount with the rice. The miso soup also had a gentle, light flavor and was easy to enjoy with the meal. Next time I’d like 5 sasami katsu together with zangi. umm
