a quiet local museum preserving the history of the old tomiuchi railway and furenai station. inside, there’s a charming display of the original station setup like uniforms, ticket machines, timetables, and signage, giving a glimpse into what life at the station once felt like! other exhibits include route maps, train wheels, and panels about hokkaido’s rail history. the outdoor trains are unfortunately deteriorating badly, and the steps are not-very-safe to climb, but the museum itself is fascinating and full of care. a peaceful and nostalgic stop for anyone who loves old japanese railways 🚂🌿
View on GoogleWho would have thought there was a free railway memorial museum in a place like this? I happened to stop by and it was open, so I went in. It only occupies the first floor, but displays photographs and related items looking back on the history of 富内線, which operated at the time. I wish I had ridden 富内線 once before it closed. Outside, there was a steam locomotive and a train that apparently becomes a riders' hostel at certain times of year.
View on GoogleD51 is so cool! It is a memorial museum with a “Boys like this kind of thing, right?” feel! I had been curious about this place for a while, and visiting was absolutely the right decision! I am not especially knowledgeable about railways myself, but the history of 振内駅 and the former 富内線 is presented so clearly that I found myself drawn in. You can really feel the bustle of those days and the role the railway played in the region. Actual railway vehicles are also displayed outside, and the park-like atmosphere makes even a simple stroll enjoyable. It is a wonderful spot where you can feel the history of 平取町, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it even to people wondering, “Is it just for railway fans?
View on GoogleThe building is impressive, but the riders' hostel using the outdoor passenger carriage was dangerous because its steps had rotted and were on the verge of collapsing. Since admission is free, maintenance must be difficult, but it is a worthwhile facility, so they should consider ways to make use of it.
View on GoogleI stopped by while camping in 二風谷. It is about 20 minutes by car from the campsite. Inside, a video of the final day of operation plays on a loop. Watching it before looking at the vehicles outside gives you a better sense of the atmosphere back then, so I recommend doing that.
