Some of our favorite travel memories come from unplanned detours, and Mount Tokachi was exactly that. While visiting Shirogane Blue Pond and Shirahige Waterfall, the kids spotted smoky plumes rising from the volcano in the distance, so we followed the road up to the mountain. The drive led us to the Tokachi-dake Observatory, with ample parking, restrooms, vending machines, and information about the area’s volcanic history. With perfect weather, we hiked partway up the rocky trail toward the crater, passing alpine plants, wildflowers, and dramatic volcanic terrain. The views of the Furano and Biei countryside below were spectacular, with rolling green hills and farmland contrasting sharply against the rugged mountainside. We didn’t make it to the summit as it was getting late, but the hike was absolutely worth it. Watching steam rise from the mountain amid such raw, untamed scenery was unforgettable. We’ll definitely be back to finish the climb next time—preferably with better hiking shoes!
View on GoogleNot recommended to visit in Spring. Visited on Apr 2026, and the place was still covered in snow and we couldn’t hike up from the parking to the observatory. Even the stairs and paths were covered in snow and not usable. The road and parking spot actually looked like the snow was purposed shoveled so there is a path to the parking spot. The view is still nice however.
View on GoogleCame here about 3 weeks ago. It is a lookout on a hill just a short walk from the car park. Other than the view, which was not great on a cloudy day, there is not much else here.
View on GoogleA 15 minutes car ride detour from Blue Pound. It is on a highland and the temperature is cooler. The winter snow is still there despite it is now late May. Free car park
View on GoogleI visited Mt. Tokachidake on October 3, 2025, hoping to catch the beautiful autumn foliage of Biei. The majestic and mysterious scenery lived up to its reputation, but a couple of things are essential if you're planning a hike. First, proper hiking boots are a must. The trail is covered in rocky fields of various sizes right from the start. Also, be aware that this is brown bear country, so I strongly recommend attaching a bear bell to your pack as a wise precaution. The trail entrance is bustling with tourists, but the crowds thin out considerably just a little way up, allowing for a peaceful trek. My goal was to reach the shelter, but as 4 PM approached, dark clouds suddenly rolled in. For safety, I reluctantly had to turn back without reaching the summit. It was a real shame that I couldn't witness the crater of the active volcano spewing its cloud-like smoke up close. However, the view from a distance was more than enough to feel the raw power and awe of nature. That mysterious and beautiful sight has already made me promise myself a return trip. Around 4 PM on the Thursday I visited, there were very few people ascending or descending, allowing me to fully experience the serene mountain. I definitely want to come back on a clear day and conquer the summit. P.S. As you can see from my attached activity log, my hike for the day clocked in at 3.37 miles with an elevation gain of 1,329 ft. This is a challenging and rewarding climb, not just a casual walk, so come prepared! Photos attached.
