During our visit to the Bibai Local History Museum, we were impressed by the variety of exhibits on display. It was a rainy day when we explored Bibai City, so we adjusted our itinerary to focus on indoor attractions, with the museum being one of the highlights. Through its diverse exhibits, we learned a great deal about the city's rich history, particularly its connection to the coal mining industry, which played a significant role in Bibai's development. This museum is highly recommended for those who enjoy learning about local history and culture. Do note that there is an entrance fee, but it’s well worth it for the insights and knowledge you’ll gain.

View on GoogleThe displays cover coal mines, farming equipment, and Showa-era life in particular detail, inviting you to reflect on the resilient people who lived in Bibai and its former prosperity. Plant and animal specimens, taxidermy, and an Ainu diorama Welcome you after you pass through the arch. After the Showa zone, the visit concludes with displays on modern Bibai's industries and special exhibitions. The interior is dim and calm, centered on black tiles reminiscent of coal, and you can view the back garden from the rest area. I think it's a high-quality museum even among Hokkaido's local history museums, worth stopping by even from far away.
View on GoogleAdmission is 300円. 炭鉄港 cards are distributed to paying visitors. Dam cards were also being handed out for free, so I got one. Since this is Bibai, there were naturally lots of coal-mining exhibits. They were also holding the special exhibition 「懐かしき昭和の暮らし展」. The town must have been lively during the coal mines' heyday. National energy policy supported convict labor too, and the zaibatsu all rushed into coal mining. Then the change in energy policy caused a sudden decline. Military uniforms and swords were on display, and they certainly had an imposing presence. 2025.10.26.

As you'd expect from a mining town, the exhibits place particular emphasis on coal and the town's development. ※Everyone is posting photos from inside the museum, but is that okay? Did you check?
