The Art was stunning and well preserved.
View on Google別海町郷土資料館 The town’s history, nature, and everyday life packed into a tiny museum!!! There are just so many taxidermy animals!!! The gigantic brown bear is breathtaking. It’s way too big! The display of a horse-drawn wagon carrying milk is so characteristic of 別海🥛 What I found interesting was the railway track display. From horse-drawn colonial railways to the national railway, as the motive power leveled up, the tracks did too! Then there’s the mammoth tooth fossil. Apparently, 4/15 of those found in Japan came from 別海町! This exhibition space is incredible. Mammoths, butterflies, geology-related items, fish displays, and a stuffed bear are crammed into a tiny room……🙃 There are also lots of old photos on display, conveying the harsh living conditions from the pioneering era through the postwar years… The people who survived those times were amazing
View on GoogleThis museum is a 2-minute walk from the 常盤 bus stop served by 阿寒バス/根室交通バス and is attached to the municipal library. Admission is free for high school students and younger, and 350円 for adults. If you speak to the staff when you enter, they will turn on the exhibition room lights and so on. The exhibits are divided between the first and second exhibition rooms. The first room displays items related to folklore and natural science, including farming tools, everyday utensils, and taxidermy animals. The second room has exhibits on Ainu archaeological sites and the town’s history during the Meiji Restoration, as well as the station name sign from 奥行臼 Station on the 厚床 branch of the JR標津線. Overall, the exhibits are well worth seeing, and I think anyone visiting 別海町 as a tourist should stop by at least once.

View on GoogleWhen you become friendly with people from 道東, they always tell you how to deal with brown bears. First, get a sense of their size. There are mammoth tooth fossils and dioramas that bring back memories of old social studies lessons. It’s fun. The building next door is a lovely archive museum, and 350円 for 2 museums is cheap.
