彫刻美術館ステーションギャラリー opened on April 21, Heisei 24, as a branch of 中原悌二郎記念旭川市彫刻美術館. Located at the east entrance inside 旭川駅, the gateway to 「彫刻のまち旭川」, it is a gallery with free admission where sculptures can be enjoyed more casually. The sculpture museum's collection centers on the 12 sculptures left by 中原悌二郎 and also includes works by sculptors who influenced him, such as ロダン and 荻原守衛, recipients of the 中原悌二郎賞, and sculptors connected to 旭川. ステーションギャラリー mainly introduces works by sculptors connected to 旭川 and 北海道, including large works by 砂澤ビッキ, and holds special exhibitions several times a year…

This Station Gallery situated within the train station is brilliant and convenient. It’s sort of next to a souvenir shop/tourist information counter. I appreciate the minimalist design of the train station of its genre overall and thought this gallery is exactly where it’s meant to be for when you are not in a hurry. Current exhibition of Italian furniture designers is wonderful. Plan ahead of time to enjoy this because you will miss some details if you blink. 😇 I pay my respect and give credit to the local government and community in Asahikawa who have supported the arts and made arts itself incredibly accessible to the public and tourists by establishing public galleries (free admission and paid ones) and public art (in sculpture parks and bridges). I spent days just walking around this area exploring exhibitions and sculptures around town.

Part of the 「織田コレクション」, outstanding 20th-century chairs, tables, and other pieces collected and studied over many years by chair researcher 織田憲嗣, was on display for a limited time.

It's a free gallery inside the station. When I visited in September 2024, part of chair collector 織田憲嗣's collection was on display. The area around 旭川市 and 東川町 is famous for furniture.

Since it was a free gallery inside the station, I thought I might be able to take a quick look, so I stopped by 10 minutes before my train departed. I tried to make a quick circuit, but perhaps because there were no other visitors, a staff member kept following me and trying to explain the works. Even when I said, “I'm in a hurry, so I can't take my time today… sorry,” it didn't seem to get through, so I hurried out. Ideally, you should take your time appreciating a museum, but given that it's in a station, I think some people want a quick look because they have little time and don't often come here. I would have appreciated being left to look on my own.
