Perched along Hiyamizu Pass, the Caldera Observatory offers an amazing panoramic view of Akaigawa and its surrounding landscapes. The breathtaking scenery makes it a perfect spot for photography or simply marveling at nature’s beauty. However, visiting this observatory comes with some challenges. Cars can’t pass through in winter due to heavy snow, and the area can be quite cold even during other seasons. Additionally, there are no facilities on-site, so be prepared before heading up.

View on GoogleI tried to visit by car on March 20, but gave up after being blocked by a wall of snow about 1m high. I approached from the intersection after leaving Hiyamizu Tunnel, but there were no road closure signs or anything, so I imagine people don't normally come here. Although cars couldn't enter, I don't think it was closed, since some people were continuing beyond it on cross-country skis.
View on Google・The scenery is good (you can see Mount Yōtei). ・The parking lot is small. ・There are no toilets, shops, etc. ・The air is delicious😋 ・If you continue straight through to Yoichi, the road is narrow (roadside grass grows out into the road) and has lots of bends, so take care! Check the rest for yourself🤣
