Opened in 1936. This is a local museum displaying and explaining the rich “nature” of 網走 and オホーツク, and their “history” and “culture” from ancient times to the present. The building, designed by 田上義也, is also registered as a national Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

I came here for the Abashiri Showa era’s exhibition, the exhibition is small but it’s well planned and you get to see every angle of the living style under the Showa era. Ground floor has tons of specimens and they all look super real…… you’ll get to know the animals near by Abashiri area. They also have several photo books for you to understand plants and animals from different months near the museum :) it’s so cute. On the second floor you get to see the aboriginal ppl’s life style and Abashiri’s history. It took me around 2 hours to finish exploring this museum. English is not available here, but Google translate is quite accurate. Not all the items have a story so you can just come and enjoy + explore. The fee is only 120 yen for adult. The building itself also looks interesting (feels like it’s from the Ghibli’s movie), the window on the second floor is amazing :) The only thing that needs to remind tourists is —— you need to climb a bit (the museum is on a small hill) if you have leg or hip issue, will suggest you to take a taxi or drive here.

120yen entrance fee, 2 stories of exhibition, finish in about 30mins top. Japanese wordings only. I use Google translate to view. Better to go to the Northern People Museum for a better experience.

One building to which I feel deeply attached as part of the remembered landscape of my early life is 網走市立郷土博物館. Having attended the elementary school very nearby, coming here brings back memories of those days. The wooden elementary school has also been rebuilt, leaving this local museum as the only building that retains its old appearance. 網走市立郷土博物館 was completed in Showa 11 (1936). It was designed by 田上義也 (たのうえよしや, 1899〜1991), who worked as a draftsman in the site office of フランク・ロイド・ライト (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1867〜1959), who had come to Japan to build the Imperial Hotel. He was one of 北海道's earliest architects and is also known as the founder of 札幌交響楽団. 網走 once had 『山水閣ホテル』, its first Western-style hotel, designed by 田上義也 and featuring an impressive spiral staircase, but it no longer survives.
