Waroeng Tengkleng Gadjah on Jalan Kaliurang offers a lively, authentic local warung experience. Despite being constantly packed with locals and tourists, the open-air space feels welcoming. The staff works incredibly fast to clear tables and maintain good sanitation, which is impressive given the sheer volume of customers. The restaurant is named "Gajah" (elephant) for a reason: the portions are massive! I ordered the signature Tengkleng Kuah, and it was a visual and culinary masterpiece. The plate was overflowing with huge chunks of tender goat ribs bathed in a glistening, rich, yellowish broth. The meat practically falls off the bone. Topped generously with crispy fried shallots and fiery bird's eye chilies (cabe rawit), the broth is deeply savory, perfectly spiced, and incredibly comforting.
View on GoogleThe food is delicious here. The tengkleng meat is tender in tengkleng with soup (such as original-a little hot, tongseng), and in fried tengkleng. You can choose for the satay meat, whether you want beef or lamb. The satay is also tender if you compare it with the fried satay. They also offer other kinds of food like chicken and duck. And you can take your own rice. The service is quite fast but there is no standby waitress near the table, so you must call them from a little far away. The restaurant is very spacious and has a lot of parking space. But when we had finished eating, we saw a cat and also a mouse near the table 🥲
View on GoogleVisited Tengkleng Gajah, and honestly, this place offers incredible value for money. Coming from Jakarta, everything in Yogyakarta feels so much more affordable — and Tengkleng Gajah is one of those places where the portions are so generous that the price feels almost unbelievable. We only ordered two portions for four people, and it was more than enough to keep everyone full. We tried both: - Original Tengkleng - Fried Tengkleng (Tengkleng Goreng) Both were excellent. The meat was super tender and not chewy at all, making it very easy to enjoy. The original version came with a light, flavorful, and refreshing broth that was deeply savory without feeling too heavy. The fried version had a richer, more concentrated flavor, perfect if you prefer something a little more intense. Overall, Tengkleng Gajah is definitely worth every rupiah. Huge portions, tender meat, and comforting flavors make it one of my favorite places to enjoy this iconic Yogyakarta dish 🍖✨
View on GoogleTengkleng Gajah is a great place to enjoy delicious food with generous portions. The area is spacious, and the parking space is also wide and convenient. The food is very tasty, especially the tengkleng, and the portion size is quite big. Although you may need to wait during busy holiday periods, it’s definitely worth it. They also offer unlimited rice refills, which is a nice bonus. Overall, highly recommended!
View on GoogleI love the satay here. The beef satay and lamb satay are so tender and the portion is so big. This place is spacious and has a lot of seats. The iga bakar (grilled ribs) is not bad too.
