I’m writing this reviews for foreigners (EU and US mostly). Come if you want to value and support local culture and artistic initiatives and the 17/18 EUR ticket is not significant to your budget, which was our case. But have realistic expectations about the level of performance you will get :) someone wrote here it felt like a school play, but the school plays of my school had better infrastructure and costumes I must say :) The good stuff: it is quite well organised. You can buy tickets online and there are numbered seats. Members are staff are throughout the property to guide you, and are all very friendly and efficient. The place itself looks like a gymnasium with a courtyard, and the garden is very beautiful and felt pleasant at night. There is a buffet restaurant on site which you can purchase with your ticket (we did not), as well as two stands for bites and drinks (street food, if that’s your thing). The bathroom was clean. They give a one-pager summary of the history which was very helpful even for us, who already knew a bit about the story. It finished on time. I enjoyed seeing the typical costumes of the story and most importantly, listening to and looking at the group playing the gamelan. That was certainly the highlight for me. The issues: overall, it just didn’t feel very professional (they are apparently doing this for 50y though). There was no scenario, and very poor light infrastructure. The mic of the host was very bad and she was speaking too close to the musicians, so we could not understand a thing. The seats we had had no back support but that didn’t bother me much. My main concern was all the fire (including fireworks!!!!) they use in the presentation in this wooden gymnasium with no emergency exits!!! When we saw it we just could not believe. Please take this into account and at least inform guests about emergency exit and plan and reassure that fire extinguishers are available. This is serious.

Amazing Cultural Experience in Yogyakarta I recently watched the Ramayana Ballet Purawisata, and it was an unforgettable experience. The performance tells the story of Rama and Shinta through traditional Javanese dance, music, and beautiful costumes. The dancers were very expressive, and the live gamelan music made the atmosphere even more magical. One of the most exciting parts was the fire scene, which made the show feel dramatic and unique. The place is comfortable and easy to find, located in the center of Yogyakarta. The staff were also friendly and helpful. Overall, I highly recommend this place for anyone who wants to enjoy traditional Indonesian culture. It is perfect for both local visitors and tourists.

My recent visit to watch the Ramayana Ballet at Purawisata in Yogyakarta was a culturally engaging experience with strong storytelling and well-paced performances that made the classic tale of Rama and Sita easy to follow. The live gamelan music added depth and authenticity, and the dancers showed clear skill and dedication. However, while the pacing was satisfying, the overall presentation could be improved, particularly in terms of costume quality and production value. There were moments where some costumes appeared to fall apart mid-show, which slightly distracted from the otherwise immersive experience and took away from the visual impact. Despite these issues, it was still a meaningful and worthwhile cultural performance that showcases the beauty of Javanese tradition.

Excellent show. Very interesting, quite interactive, and exciting. The actors were pretty, the performances were lively and the venue was amazing. Pre performance Dinner was excellent and the staff was friendly and accommodating. Not for a moment I felt bored, neither was it difficult to understand the storyline. However, some information sheet about the play to those not familiar with Ramayana legend, would be helpful for them to understand the characters.

Nice show, i watched Roro Jonggrang story n got the front seat. The dancers spoke in bahasa indonesia n the narator spoke bilingual ( indo n english). A bit dissapointed cause they didn't speak javanese n there was no some gending java. It would be great eventhough i can't understand all of it. Maybe for another story i will come back. Thank you for the discount ticket.
