Down-to-earth roadside pit stop with a mellow interior whipping up classic Javanese fried chicken.

Whole free-range chicken processed in a traditional way using firewood inside a large clay pot

First, it had no price on the menu, and secondly turned out each portion was twice as we thought (for one portion). They could have guided their consumers to order as their need, instead they were silent. Taste were quite okay, coming for the vibe of local legend restaurant.

The chicken’s definitely tasty, can’t deny that, but it’s not exactly mind-blowing. The price is a bit on the steep side, and there’s no proper standard for pricing the chicken. The cashier and the waiter just decide the price based on how big the chicken looks — a bit subjective, innit? But yeah, that’s just how it goes… people wanna get rich quick, don’t they. 😅

Ayam Goreng Jawa Mbah Cemplung is a well-known eatery that attracts visitors with its reputation for serving traditional Javanese fried chicken. Located in a rustic setting, this spot has become a destination for those curious about authentic flavors. However, my visit here left me with mixed feelings, as certain aspects of the experience didn’t quite meet my expectations. To be honest, the food itself was underwhelming. While the fried chicken was decent, I didn’t find anything particularly special about the taste that would set it apart from similar dishes at other restaurants. Considering the price, which I found to be on the higher side, the flavor didn’t justify the cost. In comparison to other places I’ve tried, the value for money felt lacking. The dining environment also left much to be desired. The seating area was quite hot and uncomfortable, which detracted from the overall experience. On top of that, the presence of numerous flies made it hard to fully enjoy the meal. A better-maintained dining area would significantly improve the atmosphere and make the visit more enjoyable for customers. In summary, Ayam Goreng Jawa Mbah Cemplung may appeal to those looking for a rustic and traditional dining experience, but for me, it fell short in both taste and comfort. With a bit more attention to cleanliness and value, this place could live up to its reputation, but as it stands, I’d likely explore other options for Javanese fried chicken.

Legendary fried chicken dish in Yogyakarta. The ambience is still traditional, they keep their original menu from years ago up until now. Chicken was so good, it matches my tastebud. It’s so rich in rempah and quiet salty, that’s why it was so good eaten with warm rice and a glass of Iced Orange.
