🌊 Fun Facts About Aek Tano Ponggol 1. It’s the “Natural Cutter” of Samosir Island Aek Tano Ponggol is the only river that cuts through Samosir Island, making the island technically almost separated from mainland Sumatra. **2. Created by Dutch engineering Although the river existed naturally, the Dutch widened and deepened it in the early 1900s so ships could pass through and shorten travel time around Lake Toba. 3. Has a Rotating Bridge The famous Ponggol Bridge can rotate (swing open) to let large boats pass. Locals love watching this because it happens only occasionally. 4. The Water Current Is Strong Aek Tano Ponggol has one of the strongest currents in Lake Toba — that’s why it’s a favorite spot for locals to chill and watch the water rushing by. 5. Symbol of Batak Separation & Myth There’s a Batak legend that the river was formed when a powerful king sliced the land to separate Samosir from the mainland to protect his people. 6. It’s a Popular Sunset Spot The river area is a surprisingly good place to watch sunsets, especially near the bridge and café areas. 7. The Name Has Meaning Aek = water Tano = land Ponggol = cut So the name literally means “the water that cuts the land.

We took this bridge to cross from Samosir Island back to main island. We stopped just before the bridge near a stall selling mangoes that were cheap and sweet.
