View on GooglePasar Hewan Bolu is located in Rantepao, North Toraja, South Sulawesi, and is known as the largest buffalo market in Indonesia, and even in the world. Built in 1992 on approximately 2,7 hectares of land and now expanded to 4 hectares, this market has become the main center for trading buffalo, animals that hold an important place in Toraja culture. The market can accommodate more than 1.000 buffalo on a single market day. Pasar Bolu operates once every six days, following the traditional calendar of the Toraja community. On market days, hundreds of buffalo of various types are bought and sold, including rare buffalo such as Tedong Bonga (albino buffalo) and Tedong Saleko, which command very high prices. Buffalo prices at this market vary from around Rp30 million to as much as Rp1 billion, depending on the buffalo's size, type, and physical beauty. Besides being a trading center, Pasar Hewan Bolu also plays a strong cultural role. In Toraja customs, especially in Rambu Solo' funeral ceremonies, buffalo symbolize social status and sacrifice, so demand for buffalo is always high. Therefore, this market is not just a place for buying and selling, but also an important part of keeping Toraja traditions alive. Besides buffalo, Pasar Bolu also trades other animals such as pigs and various local products, from vegetables, fruits, and Toraja coffee to handicrafts. The bustling market atmosphere, full of bargaining and rich in cultural color, makes it a unique tourist destination for travelers who want to experience the pulse of traditional Toraja life firsthand. The market is only about 2 kilometers from downtown Rantepao and is easily accessible by local vehicles. Visitors are advised to come in the morning when market activity is bustling and full of life. The vendors and local people are Not Very Friendly
