Firstly, the museum is housed in a beautiful building. It is stately and grand. Upon entering, you are greeted by a friendly front desk personnel. The interior branches out to the left, right and behind the centre where the information desk is located. The main exhibits are found in various rooms that are mostly air-conditioned. Interesting exhibits include some bricks with markings from the historic site of Fort van Gowa Sultanaat or Benteng Somba Opu. There are prints of old photos of old Makassar during the Dutch colonial years. In other rooms, there is a colourful ethnic clothing exhibit from the Makassar, Bugis and Toraja people. Upon going up the grand old staircase, you will find a small cinema and a replica of the Mayor's office. Portraits of the Mayor's of the City is on display with little notes describing the person. In summary, if you are in the city centre, it is a nice place to cool down after a hot, humid time walking.

A small museum with quite a lot of local stories inside. Nice and helpful staff. Free entrance.

I’m having an absolute blast exploring Makassar and learning more about its rich history. I’m surprised how little I knew about Makassar before I came here. The museum and guided tours are completely free, and they’re actually really well-organized and informative. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend checking out this museum!

Very disappointing. Lots of display case were empty. Not many original historical pieces. Lack of attention and effort made to provide information of displayed items, for examples: 1 display case contained several bricks with different motive but there's only 1 sign saying chicken foot print on brick while it's obvious they're various animal print other than chicken on other bricks. Chinese tribes was describe with European looking mannequins wearing Chinese clothing. As I was there, there's a group of students visiting this museum. It's sad to see such inaccurate information used to teach students. The only valuable piece of historic artifacts were the bricks from the Fort van Gowa (Somba Ompu), old currencies, and the building itself which is a beautiful building
