My son wanted ice cream, so I took him to the famous Toko Oen in Malang. I thought the ice cream would be as delicious as the "Z" ice cream in Surabaya, but when it arrived, he wasn't happy with the small portion and the plain, dry appearance. After tasting it, he didn't like it because it tasted like a soft popsicle, not ice cream. He was even more shocked when he paid for it with his own money, which cost 71k. "Don't ever take me here again, that was a bad choice," he said 😩 By the way, the place is nice. They've kept the Dutch style of the house and the interior.
View on GoogleA local friend of mine recommended this place for dinner. While I appreciate the nostalgia and was interested in trying the well-known ice cream, it was a mixed experience. Positives include plenty of seating, short wait time, and friendly staff. Food was decent, ice cream is less creamy than I’m used to. However, I was very confused why they brought me a bowl and spoon full of ice, chocolate, and avocado when I ordered a drink…. I wish I had gotten a different drink. My food was fresh and I liked the assortment of items. Even though staff were friendly, they seemed like bored kids had nothing to do. The architecture is interesting but definitely shows its age and is kind of on the dirty and grimy side.
View on GoogleWe visited Toko Oen in Malang, hoping to enjoy both its historical charm and its food, but unfortunately, we were very disappointed. I would rate this place 2 out of 5. The food quality was poor and far from tasty, and it did not live up to the expectations for a place of its reputation. The restaurant itself was dirty, and the overall cleanliness left much to be desired. The staff seemed unmotivated and uninterested in serving customers properly. There was no proper welcome or guidance, and it felt like we had to fend for ourselves. The only redeeming factor is the historical value of the place, which might be interesting for those who appreciate heritage, but otherwise, there are far better dining options outside. I truly hope the management takes these issues seriously and improves both the service and hygiene. Maintaining cleanliness and having attentive, friendly staff would make a huge difference. Until then, I would only recommend visiting Toko Oen for its history, not for a quality meal.
View on GoogleYou went into a time machine that took you back to the 80s or even 70s. The store is preserved as close to its original, with original furnitures and dećor. They toke you back in time that they only take cash 😅 It's something that I questioned actually, why cash only?!
View on GoogleThe ice cream doesn't taste that good, rather tastes like frozen milk, and it's overpriced. Service is okay, they don't accept any other payment methods other than cash (a downside for me that rarely bring cash with me). The only good about this restaurant is its vintage and old era atmosphere, which can brings some nostalgia. And it's not crowded. No parking lot so expect to walk a bit (not a problem for healthy person), but non of the parking lot around it are free.
