A great historic place that have many collections related to press in Indonesia, such as newspapers, typewriters, camera, etc. You also can visit the library that air-conditioned and has access to free Wifi. Nowadays, several parts of the building is being renovated and moved.

I enjoyed my stop at this well-kept museum dedicated to the development of Indonesia’s news media. The focus is on the establishment of local and then indigenous media during the Dutch colonial period and the Independence struggle, as well as the establishment of the National Monument. Surakarta is an important city historically for the development of the indigenous press on Java and thus for the development of Indonesia as a nation. I don’t think you need to know much Indonesian history as it is more or less covered in the translated timelines across the exhibition rooms, although some basic familiarity will enhance your understanding of the materials. Most of the printed information is in English translation although you will be offered a tour. I declined as I preferred to look around on my own. Entry is free but you are required to enter personal details in the guest log to support the national monument’s reporting. A valuable stop in Surakarta. Thank you very much.

The National Press Monument (Indonesian: Monumen Pers Nasional) is a monument and museum to the national Indonesian press. Formally established in 1978, more than 20 years after it was first proposed, the monument is located in Surakarta, Central Java, and operated by the Ministry of Communications and Information. The complex consists of an old society building, which was constructed in 1918 and used for the first meeting of the Reporters Association of Indonesia (Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia, or PWI), as well as several subsequent expansions; it is listed as a Cultural Property Of Indonesia. It was quite place. I like the unique architecture of this beautiful building.
