A really fascinating insight into batik making, batik history, meanings behind different patterns, and how batik is interlinked with Javanese and Indonesian cultural history - we had a wonderful private tour of the personal collection of this Indonesian family run Batik house. Very engaging, even my husband was really interested who has no interest in fabric or fashion history! So a big win to keep us engaged for 1.5 hours. Our guide Gigih was very knowledgeable, friendly and fun. Tour language was in English. No photos allowed except with prior consent. Thanks so much Gigih!
View on GoogleGigih is an excellent guide: friendly, warm, and genuinely knowledgeable about batik. He walked us through the collection and explained the batik collection and the meaning behind different patterns clearly and patiently. When we told him we wanted a gift for a friend, he took real care in helping us choose a beautiful hand-drawn batik piece, guiding us through the options based on what we described. His enthusiasm and expertise made the visit far more than a standard tour. Highly recommend asking for him if you visit.
View on GoogleIf you really want to know how and what batik is about, then please visit this museum. In a guided tour of an hour you get to see the finest batik in the world. You get to see the finest and the most exclusive and rarest pieces. All presented in 11 rooms, very nicely and appropriately presented. The guide was very knowledgeable and did not push you to buy anything. You also get to see how the wax is applied to the fabric in real time by highly experienced women. And this is only a small, yet important part of the whole, long process. The shop is next door and also worth a visit. This your chance to be sure of what you are buying is real. Often the batik is stamped, but just as often, it is a mix of stamping and hand-applied waxing (which really drives up the price). But the price range has something for everyone. Go enjoy. You don't have to buy anything if you don't want to.
