Beautiful sunrise between two volcanoes. Ticket for foreigners: IDR 50,000 It was still quite dark between 4:45 and 5:15 am but that is when the stars were visible and cool to look at. From 5:20 am onwards, rays of light in the horizon were visible. Around 6 am, the sunlight started to appear and it was a breathtaking sight. Cool photo spots are available

🌅 A hidden gem and photographer’s paradise‼️ Is it really worth hiking in the middle of the night just to wait for this stunning "jungle-volcano-temple" sunrise? 🤣 🌄 This is a legendary, god-tier vantage point to capture the raw panorama of Borobudur, morning mist, and Mount Merapi all in one frame. Most of those dreamlike, postcard-perfect shots circulating on the internet were born right here! BUT—and it’s a huge BUT❗️Whether you can actually get a masterpiece completely depends on the weather. 😭 Pic 1️⃣ shows the ideal, dream result. This requires the perfect alignment of weather, timing, and luck, plus a telephoto lens of 400mm or above. If you’re only using a phone, you'd better attach a telephoto lens extension. Otherwise, what you’ll actually end up with is the abstract mess shown in Pics 2️⃣, 3️⃣, and 4️⃣. 🤦‍♂️ Honestly, if I didn't circle the temple spire for you, you probably wouldn't even see where it is! 🤦‍♂️ The distance is genuinely far—several kilometers away! 🤣 Take a look at the unedited raw photos before deciding if you want to visit this niche spot. Traveling around Java involves way too many early mornings. It's honestly more exhausting than grinding at work; I haven't had a single night of good sleep here. 🥱😓 🌀 Visual Awesomeness (The Sunrise Chase) ▶️ To catch the sunrise, you have to leave your hotel in total darkness before 4:00 AM. Once you arrive, it takes about a 15–20 minute light hike up dirt paths and stone steps to reach the hilltop viewing platform. 🗾 Around 5:30 AM, as the sun slowly rises from behind the distant volcano, the first rays of light (the Tyndall effect / heavenly light) pierce through the dense tropical jungle and heavy morning fog. The entire Borobudur temple looms faintly in the mist, revealing a sacred silhouette. That exact moment is the absolute golden hour for photographers. 📸 Of course, if you’re out of luck and hit a heavily overcast or rainy day, the hilltop will just be a wall of blinding white fog, and you won’t see a thing. So definitely check the weather forecast before you go. 🥲 ⚠️ Survival Guide & Practical Tips ❌ The trail up has exposed rocks and gets very damp and slippery in the early morning. Try to wear anti-slip shoes. (Guangdongness or Southeast Asia Natives may wear whatever you like.). ❌ The mosquitoes in the tropical jungle are incredibly ferocious; make sure to spray down before heading up. ✅ You can pack some snacks in your bag to curb your hunger. There is a coffee shop ☕️ at the top, but it only opens after sunrise. 🔆 🍀 The Verdict 〽️ Even though it's a "wake up earlier than a rooster" Special Forces-style grueling journey, the moment you see the sun rise and the temple awaken in the heavy mist, you’ll understand why countless photographers travel from all corners of the world to camp out here. Compared to the incredibly expensive and tightly restricted Borobudur structure tickets, this place offers insane value for money (the ticket 🎫 is only 50k IDR after all) and can give you the shot of a lifetime! But make no mistake—this is also destined to be a massive gamble!

Nice views even when cloudy, but overpriced (50k for foreigners, 20k for locals + 3k for parking), especially when cloudy. In case the people running this are reading: Please ban drones, it detracts from the experience for everyone else. It would also be better without the chicken church illumination (maybe a good alternative viewing spot?), and the many lights on and near the viewing platform that illuminate the nearby trees when it's still quite dark. Without this light pollution you could get good pictures of Merapi and stars on a clear morning. Pros: probably a great sunrise spot on a clear day, you can see Merapi as well as Borobudur.

One of the experiences in life that is best lived in the moment and not necessarily through a camera. It is amazing and life-changing to walk early before dawn to witness a very spiritual moment.

While everyone else arrived at sunrise, we arrived at noon and found it surprisingly quiet with only a few people around. We can freely enjoy the stunning view and take our time to step along the way. There’s no line for photos, so we can capture the moment effortlessly.
