Bukit Rhema, popularly known as the “Chicken Church” (Gereja Ayam), is a unique landmark near Borobudur. Despite its nickname, the building was actually designed to resemble a dove and serves as a place of prayer open to all faiths. The site became famous after appearing in Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2 movie. I visited here on a weekday, and the atmosphere was very peaceful and quiet, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The views from the top are beautiful, overlooking the surrounding hills and countryside. Getting there can be a bit challenging, as the road is steep and narrow. Visitors usually need to continue from the main parking area by local shuttle or jeep. Overall, it's a unique and worthwhile stop if you're visiting the Borobudur area.
View on GoogleUnique architecture and amazing views! Bukit Rhema (popularly known as the Chicken Church) is a truly unique and fascinating place to visit. Climbing up to the crown rewards you with incredible 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding forest and hills. The spot is well-maintained, rich in history, and even includes a nice local cassava snack at the top cafe. Definitely a must-visit for great photo opportunities and a unique cultural experience!
View on GoogleI have very mixed feelings about the so-called Chicken Church. On one hand, it’s an undeniably quirky building, and on the other, the whole tour feels like a feature-length commercial for its founder, Daniel Alamsyah, and his greatest-hits playlist of personal philanthropy. The tour talks a lot about his personal dreams and good deeds, which is fine, but the place also seems to lean hard on being “near Borobudur,” as if proximity alone makes it holy. Then there’s the part where he had people with mental disabilities help build what feels suspiciously like a giant vanity project shaped like a bird. I think I would’ve enjoyed the visit more if the focus was actually on the charitable work instead of on Daniel himself, and if the chapels weren’t basically museum props collecting dust. Still, the staff are genuinely kind, and the little café is a pleasant surprise—probably the most spiritual experience you’ll have there, especially if you’re into iced coffee with a view. In the end, I left feeling inspired… mostly to start a café next to a giant chicken.
View on GoogleWhat a lovely place to see sunrise and deep yourself in serenity. It’s not a ‘church’ anw the guide said, but a religious place for all religion. They even have small rooms for praying. From parking lot, you need to walk a bit to reach the building, or, rent a feeder. The foods are also decent, we ordered wedang to warm up the morning. Such an experience.
View on GoogleI went to Bukit Rhema after a recommendation from a local guide. The church is located on a beautiful spot overlooking the nearby valley. Inside the church, you can find an interesting exposition about the various religious origins of Bukit Rhema. At the end of my visit, I had an excellent lunch of traditional pisang goreng. Thank you for the wonderful experience, if i could i would give this church 6 stars!
