A Warm Hug from Semarang: Discovering the Multicultural Heritage of Wedang Ronde at Pak Kirman If comfort could be served in a bowl, it would undoubtedly look like a serving of Wedang Ronde. On a cool evening in Semarang, there is perhaps no better place to experience this traditional Indonesian staple than at the legendary Pak Kirman stall. More than just a dessert, Pak Kirman’s offerings are a liquid map of Indonesia’s multicultural history, blending Javanese, Chinese, and Dutch influences into every steaming spoonful. The beauty of Wedang Ronde lies in its origins. It is essentially the Javanese answer to the Chinese Tang Yuan. The name itself is a linguistic fusion: "Wedang" is the Javanese word for a hot ginger-based drink, while "Ronde" is derived from the Dutch word for "round," referring to the glutinous rice balls that bob in the syrup. At Pak Kirman, the Wedang Ronde is a masterclass in balance. The broth—infused heavily with ginger and palm sugar—provides a spicy, aromatic heat that hits the back of your throat in the most soothing way. The ronde (glutinous balls) are perfectly chewy, yielding to a center of crushed, sweet peanut paste that adds a delightful crunch and a nutty depth to the experience. While the Ronde is the star, the supporting menu at Pak Kirman is equally impressive: Wedang Kacang: This was a personal highlight. Unlike the thin broth of the Ronde, the Wedang Kacang features peanuts that have been slow-cooked until they reach a consistency akin to a sweet, velvety porridge. It is rich and heart-warming, with just a subtle hint of ginger to cut through the sweetness. Wedang Roti: This dish is a fascinating example of culinary acculturation. By incorporating bread (a Dutch influence) into the local ginger broth, you get a texture play that is both soft and comforting, as the bread soaks up the spicy-sweet liquid like a sponge. Wedang Tahu: For those who prefer something lighter, the Wedang Tahu is a must-try. The "silk tofu" is exactly as described—incredibly smooth and delicate, melting almost instantly on the tongue. It is served in a clear, potent ginger and palm sugar syrup that highlights the purity of the tofu.
View on GoogleThey had various kinds of Wedang, and I tried one of them, which is the Wedang Ronde. The broth is warming my inner body, thanks to the ginger, and it’s also sweet. The Ronde itself tastes great, has a filling of crunched toasted peanuts inside. The tapioca pearls are also tender and sweet. It’s recommended. You should give it a try.
View on GoogleThis stall opens at 16.00, but mostly the tofu soup is finished by around 18.00. The food is good, but the place is a bit uncomfortable. Because there are only small benches and a lack of tables. Some of the visitors even sit on the bus shelter. The price is fair, starting at Rp 7,000. There are other snacks and food sold by the next stall.
View on GoogleSelling warm and typical Javanese drinks such as "wedang ronde", "wedang peanuts", "wedang roti", there is also ice puter. In that area they also sell wrapped rice with various fried foods. This "wedang" is especially recommended because the sweet taste is just right and delicious. Affordable prices. Clean place. Open every night and always busy with buyers.
View on GoogleThe Wedang Es Puter Pak Kirman stall offers a budget-friendly and satisfying experience. The Wedang Ronde and Bubur Kacang Hijau are only Rp 7,000 each, and they taste decent—perfect for a light evening treat. There’s also an ice cream stall nearby, where you can get delicious scoops for just Rp 10,000! The flavors are refreshing and definitely worth the price. However, seating is quite limited, so it might not be the most comfortable spot if it’s busy. Plus, there are a lot of mosquitoes around, which can be a bit annoying. Overall, it’s a nice option for an affordable snack, but be prepared for the seating and mosquito situation.
